One man…Two nights… Three 40lb+ carp😱
An unexpected session turned into an unforgettable weekend for Bertus. With his cousin still being new to this type of angling, he asked Bertus to join him on a session.
After arriving at the dam a bit later than he was hoping, he quickly sorted out his lines before helping his cousin to redo his. Baiting the rigs with one of his favourite snowman setups, comprised of a 16mm Atlantic Marine wafter and 10mm Wild Berries pop-up from Carp Pro Baits.
After a long day at work they both decided to get to bed early and see what the hours of darkness held in store. It was around midnight when Bertus had his first take, the take was so slow, that he almost though is was a crab dragging the rig. After a slow and steady battle, his slipped the net under the fish and couldn’t believe his eyes. The last thing he was expecting was to what turned out to be his new personal best at 19,45kgs. An hour and a half after dropping the rig back in the same spot, the VTX+ bite alarm sounded again, but after not managing to turn the fish, Bertus was out on the boat and the chase was on. After a brutal battle he finally managed to get the fish up onto the surface and in the net she went. This time pulling the scales to 19,2kgs. What a night! Obviously over the moon, Bertus made a call to Werner to come and take some insane pictures for him.
The day slowly passed, and while Bertus was already more than happy with his session, he redid his rods at around 2pm, making sure that they were perfectly presented just for incase another carp decided to have a feed.
After losing a fish at around 9pm, he once again dropped the rod only to be awoken again by a screaming alarms at 11pm. He jumped straight onto the boat, as he immediately felt that just like the last one, this one wasn’t going to give itself up so easy. After being towed around for 15-20 minutes, the fish finally breached the surface and slipped over the edge of the net. Yes, this was the 3rd 40lber for him, but this time in the form of a new personal best ghosty at 18,36kgs. Flabbergasted, he hoisted up an absolute trophy of a carp to enjoy the last few moments before safely releasing it.
