On behalf of the Zambia Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (ZAGO), we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mufulira District for hosting this year’s World Contraception and International Safe Abortion Day commemorations respectively. Their preparations were unmatched, dedication amazing, focus to raising awareness about the importance of access to modern contraceptives and safe abortion services respectively – made significant impact to the SRH movement. Many thanks to the guest of honour, District Commissioner, Mr Evaristo Chilumba, and keynote speakers, Town Clerk Mrs Kasonde Chisanga Musongole, District Health Director Dr Able Hamoonga, and Dr Chazya Sikambale for continued support towards achieving a healthier Zambia. To everyone at the centre of organising the event, thank you for your support and commitment to promoting reproductive health.
This year’s International Safe Abortion Day carried the theme “Safe Abortion is Life-saving Healthcare”, while World Contraception Day was commemorated under the theme “A choice for all – agency, intention, access.”

As we join the globe in commemorating International Safe Abortion Day, we are cognisant of the huge burden unsafe abortion poses not only to individual women and girls, but also to the healthcare system. We therefore join hands with all stakeholders to prevent unsafe abortion countrywide.
