One of the clearest signs of neediness I’ve found in myself is the need to be right. Not wanting to be right. Needing it, like losing the argument would take something out of me. I still catch it, usually as a knot in my gut and a decision I can’t make. A worthy man still argues his case. He just doesn’t need to win it to be okay. This week’s episode goes into where that need comes from. Neediness Was Quietly Running My Life, episode 12. Link in bio.

I’ve always been the mediator in my family. The one in the middle who brings everyone together. There’s real value in that. But it’s come at a cost. I’ve rarely taken a stand.
A stand polarises people. It makes you magnetic to some, and it repels others. And if you need everyone to like you, you can’t afford to repel anyone.
I tell the whole story in Episode 12, Neediness Was Quietly Running My Life. Give it a listen wherever you get your podcasts.

I could stand in front of my whole profession and fight for what I believed. Then one patient would say something I disagreed with, and I’d say “Oh, okay.” It took me years to see why: when it was for other people, it wasn’t about me. When it was about me, I needed to be liked. I’m still working on it. This week’s episode is the honest version of that story. Neediness Was Quietly Running My Life, episode 12. Link in bio.

When I say dangerous, I don’t mean violent. I mean capable: force in you, and the control to choose
what to do with it.
I’ve had plenty of that in my life. I stood up in front of the registration board and moved a vote of no
confidence. I ran next door the night of my neighbour’s fire. When it was for someone else, I barely
had to think about it.
But when I had to back myself, I stepped back. Dangerous for everyone else. Needy for myself.
Every time I didn’t follow through on something I believed, it was a small wound. A career’s worth of
them is what lost feels like.
I unpack this in Episode 12, Neediness Was Quietly Running My Life. Listen wherever you get your
podcasts.

I used to think the answer to needing people’s approval was more confidence. It isn’t. Some of the neediest men I’ve known were the most confident blokes in the room. What changed things for me was something quieter: knowing my worth was settled before I walked in. I’m still learning it. This week’s episode is about that journey. Most men I know have a mask for every room. One for work. One for home. One for the blokes on a
Saturday morning. And they’re good at all of them.
Every one of those masks has the same job: give the people in front of you what they need, keep it
calm, never cause an issue. And underneath them is a thought most of us have never said out loud.
Who I am isn’t enough.
Wear them long enough and you can’t remember the face underneath. That’s what lost actually is.
Not a man who’s gone missing. A man who’s handed himself out, one room at a time, in exchange for
being liked.

I’ve been the peacemaker my whole life. The bloke in the middle, keeping everyone happy. There’s good in that, but it cost me more than I realised, because I rarely took a stand. What I’ve come to see is that you can be liked by everyone and still feel like nobody really knows you. This week’s episode goes into what was underneath all that for me. Neediness was quietly running my life. Part 2 of the Reclamation Triangle, lost to worthy: the masks, two words, and an account that was always full.

For years I thought what I was missing was direction. The next goal, the next thing to build. It took me a long time to see I was chasing something else entirely, and trying to earn it one patient, one conversation, one room at a time. That’s what this week’s episode is about: what’s really underneath feeling lost. Neediness Was Quietly Running My Life, episode 12. Link in bio.

About fifteen years ago there was a panicked knock at my front door, just after dark. My neighbour. “We've got a fire. Have you got a fire extinguisher?”
There was no thought about it. Something in me took over, and I was next door pulling the pin before anyone inside knew what was going on.
I didn't build that in the moment. It was already there. And I want you to know the same thing is in you. It hasn't gone anywhere.
I go deep on this in Episode 11, Every Man Should Be Dangerous. Give it a listen wherever you get your podcasts.
