MLPA Major League Pickleball Australia Melbourne Aspire Wrap 🌯 Our Pickleball Canberra players made their debut for the Sydney Smash 💕

This was a step up for our Canberra players as the oppourtunity to play against seasoned professionals every single match was huge opportunity to test ourselves and learn what it takes to get some wins against some incredible athletes ✨

“Knowing we belong” was the first mental hurdle of the weekend as there are always questions marks when you don’t play at this level. Round 1 against the Brisbane Breakers showed clear nerves but with a 3-1 win installed some brief with Kane and Monique using their high level sporting expirence to put the Smash on notice.

Day 2 was a tougher day for the Smash Scoreboard however, I felt we played better as we settled in our partnerships. We went down 3-1 to Flame, Coasters & Thunder with some swing matches going the way of our opponentsin crunch time. With a 3 way tie to secure two spots in the semis we managed to qualify to play the top of the table Thunder in the semi and eventual winners ⚡️

In the Thunder Semi, our girls were a couple points in stealing the first game, our boys caused an upset to make it 1-all. The day before Kane and Mon got the mixed doubles against their matchup but the Thunder turned it around. Alexis and Rob couldn’t tie things up to push it to a dreambreaker but overall we can reflect and be happy with the weekend as a whole!

We’ve done our review and from looking at all the teams we have a lot of upside. We are excited to start working on all the little things that can turn the close matches to a W ready to turn a few heads at Brisbane MLP in a couple of weeks!

It was great too see a full squad at yesterday’s Kitchen Play Masterclass 🧑‍🍳👩‍🍳 Giving players the tools to make the kitchen feel like “home” will go a long way in developing d***s, counters, speed-ups… I’m looking forward to seeing this squad arrive at the kitchen more often and once they get there to start cooking 🍳

NPL NSW State Cup Wrap 🌯🥈Round 7 saw our National Pickleball League D2 teams play a knock-out style competition to round off the regular season.

Without the season MVP Monique and Captain Robbie our Canberra Comets came from behind in the semi-final mixed doubles decider against Aggies to make the finals.

Both Alexis & Jarred came big in singles to force a decider in the finals coming from 2-nil down against the Stingers.

The Stingers proved too good with the experienced Ryan Morris getting it done 22-19 in the mixed doubles deciding tie 👏

With Stingers & Comets qualifying for the finals it was only fitting we got to face off before Melbourne. Who knows maybe we can meet each other in the Gold Medal match in Melbourne?

I want to thank and congratulate our reserves Matias Garcia & Alexandra Howieson for not only making their debut but getting some clutch wins. I’m so happy the Comets could give you your debut ✨

Coaching Corner: Clutch moments 🧠

A set and 7-10 down, couple match points saved and not much luck going our way… You know when experience shines through✨

Ryan Morris has played hundreds of matches and the way he managed these high pressure moments was a Masterclass - I was lucky to have a front row seat 🍿

I want to illustrate how a game can turn on its head after a few clutch points 🧊

🔴 8-10 (1): Survive, the odds for us to win the point after getting pushed back and attacked is 10% but all those reset reps in practice allowed us to get one more ball back. Not only did we reset many balls, moving into transition when the opportunity arose forced the error - A bit of gamesmanship with the big out point so they knew they missed it 🤭

🟠 10-10 (2): Bide your time, wait for the opportunity to attack. This is where all the matches Ryan has played come into play. Many players would panic forcing a speed-up or over playing a ball but Ryan understood the moment waiting until a ball was over net height before a calculated attack to get our serve back.

🟢 10-10 (1): With the opportunity to score and go ahead in the set we wanted to apply pressure. Wanting to win the point rather than hoping our opponents would miss was the mantra. It could of been seen as reckless but we had momentum so we wanted to make our presence felt 🦁

We ended up securing the set and came strong in the third to win gold 🥇

Regardless of the result you learn so much from these moments and for us players who cannot play as many events as Ryan it is more important to use every time on court as a learning opportunity.
