Canberra Bilbys Triathlon Club is friendly club catering for complete beginners and seasoned triathletes alike. The club has grown year after year and has around 350 members, including 80 new novices each year which make us the biggest triathlon club in Canberra. The Bilbys began in 1987 in Canberra, Australia, when a group of individuals (mainly firemen) formed an informal training group to pursue their goals in the sport of triathlon. The club takes its name from the Bilby, an Australian marsupial (noted for its speed, cunning and agility - NOT!) according to our founding members). We have a year round training schedule, including regular running, swimming, cycling and mountain biking sessions, which caters for all abilities as well as a hugely popular novice program which is run each year just before the race season. We also have a number of members who organise informal training session for orienteering, rogaining and adventure races. The club also organises a number of social events for members, such as the annual cocktail party, club races and post-race get togethers.

🏃🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️Spring run program!!!!

Bilbys are running a 10-week Spring run program over 10 weeks starting on Tuesday 29th September.

Existing members who want to kickstart their training or improve their running and new members who want to get into running/triathlon as well as join a great community are encouraged to join the program.

For new members, this is the perfect program to build fitness and get involved in club activities before the novice program starts in January 2027.

⁉️ What: 10-week program of sessions held at 6pm Tuesday (Dickson Oval), 6pm Thursday (Lake Burley Griffin), 8am Sunday (Mt Ainslie or Arboretum) with qualified run coaches.
📆 When: Tuesday 29 September-Sunday 6 December
✅ Requirements: the only requirement is a current Triathlon Australia membership.
Program cost: $100 per person

Not a Triathlon Australia member?
For anyone who is not a Triathlon Australia member, you can purchase a membership through Triathlon Australia (https://www.triathlon.org.au/trial/). We just need you to have a ‘Basic’ membership or higher (i.e. not a social membership). There are also 8 week trial memberships available for $70, which are perfect for this program. Just start it right before the program kicks off.

Today our regular cycling bunch has been involved in an incident on Gungahlin Drive which has resulted in the death of one of our members and injuries to others.

Our club is devastated by these events. Our club is made up of people who love the sport of triathlon, who love getting out there and doing their best, and who support each other through the highs and lows that come with competing in a challenging sport and belonging to a community club. Today, and in the coming weeks and months, that support will be more important than ever.

At this time, the identity of our deceased member has not been released as police work with the family.

While some other members of our club were injured and members of the club were present during this incident, we will not be commenting on the circumstances of the accident due to the ongoing police investigation.

However, this tragic incident is a reminder of the vulnerability of cyclists and pedestrians when compared to a motor vehicle, and we ask this to be a reminder to all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians sharing the roads to exercise a little patience, and remember that all of us just want to get home safely.

The Bilbys cycling bunch was involved in an incident this morning on Gungahlin Drive and one member passed away at the scene. We won't share the identity of the rider while police make efforts to contact the next of kin. Another rider has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Please look after each other this morning and we will share more information when possible.
