Finally, Dad’s turn to race!

We’re back in the Formula Ford this weekend at Queensland Raceway after what has felt like a pretty long mid season break.

Round 3 definitely didn’t go our way and as we get towards the business end of the season, it’s really about consistency. Realistically, I need a little bit of luck to fall my way in the championship, but that doesn’t change much when the helmet goes on.

Push as hard as I can, keep learning, take every opportunity that comes and see what we can pull together.

Watching the kids race lately has probably been the best reminder of all though. This sport is just so damn fun.

Whatever happens with the championship, I still get to strap into a Formula Ford and race a car as hard as I possibly can.

That’s pretty bloody cool.

We’re home, and what a trip to Gladstone.

Gav probably summed the whole weekend up best himself, “I think that track really gelled for me.”

Saturday was his first ever look at the track, and by Sunday morning he’d found enough confidence and pace to put it on pole by a few tenths.

The biggest thing for us though was what happened in the races. He was able to stay with Matika all weekend, something we haven’t really been able to do before. And that’s not because she’s standing still, she continues to get quicker and better every time we race her.

The final was probably the proudest moment. Gav led for most of it, something he’s never experienced before. You could see him starting to think about defending, where to put the kart and when to close the door. He didn’t always make the right decision and ultimately didn’t have quite enough to get the win but that’s exactly where/how the learning happens.

For a kid still early in his karting journey, this weekend felt like a pretty big step forward. Well worth the trip.

Congratulations to all the winners and a massive thank you to Gladstone Kart Club, our sponsors and everyone who supported such a great event.

We’re here and ready to race.

Yesterday was all about learning the track, building confidence and getting comfortable. Today we’re ready for a fun day of racing and, like always, the only real expectation is a smile at the end of it.

Our family has been looking forward to returning to Central Queensland. Gladstone holds a special place in our family’s racing history, and seeing Gav out there creating his own memories makes us proud, regardless of what the results sheet says.

But this weekend is about something bigger than results.

It’s an opportunity for the karting community to come together and take a moment to remember Benny Benedetto #78.

Race week for Gavin, and this time we’re heading to the Gladstone Kart Club for the Race for Benny #78, part of the Wide Bay Curtis Cup.

This one is shaping up to be a great meeting with plenty of local support behind it, $500 1st place price, tyres and some pretty cool incentives up for grabs.

Our family was heavily involved with the Gladstone club at one stage, so it’ll be great to get back there, catch up with some familiar faces and be part of a big weekend for the club.

For Gavin, the plan stays simple. Learn, keep improving every session, race hard and have plenty of fun doing it.

Can’t wait to get there and get started.

Well, this could certainly be enticing for our race team!

I’ve raced with and against Benny on plenty of occasions over the years. I’m not sure if Dad ever actually raced with him, but I do know the two of them have shared more than their fair share of red w**e together!

It’s been 12 years since I last raced a kart, but this could be a great opportunity for my boys and me to get out there together and enjoy one of my all-time favourite tracks.

Could be a lot of fun. Keen to see who else wants to come out and play!

A big weekend at Toowoomba & Lockyer Valley Kart Club.

Two days of racing, two different directions, and plenty to learn.

Saturday was a massive challenge for Gavin. He'd never raced the reverse layout before and had just one 8 minute practice session to learn it before heading straight into qualifying.

He struggled early but worked through it. By the end of the day he was back competing with the drivers we would normally expect him to be around.

Sunday was where it really started to come together.

Great starts, a new PB, and importantly, he was sticking with the lead pack for those opening laps rather than watching them disappear.

For Gav, there was another little milestone too, getting within 8 tenths of the leader and around 5 tenths of the lead packs fastest times.

They're only numbers, but for us they're a massive sign that the work, learning and effort are starting to come together. We still have a long way to go and that's part of the fun.

But the best moment of the weekend? The smile, fist bump and "thank you" as we left the track.

We put a lot into this, but seeing him making friends, loving the sport and appreciating everything it gives him beyond just racing makes it all worthwhile.

This weekend was never about results. It was about learning.

We headed to IPSWICH KART CLUB knowing we were stepping into arguably Australia's premier kart club, with a 24-Kart Cadet 9 field that would be right at home at a State or National Championship. If we wanted to improve, this was exactly where we needed to be.

The biggest positive was seeing Gavin continue to grow as a driver. As he gains confidence and understanding, he's beginning to race rather than simply drive. That brings a whole new set of challenges, split second decisions, racecraft and pressure that can only be learned by being in the middle of the action.

One of the highlights came in the final after a DNS in Heat 2, caused by a simple issue that left us starting from the very back of the grid. Gavin produced some of his best racing yet, setting up passes, thinking ahead and showing patience rather than just diving for every gap. There were mistakes too, including one hard fought battle where Gavin chose to spin rather than drive into another competitor when the door closed. It wasn't the outcome we wanted, but it was the arguably the right decision and another reminder of just how difficult this sport is for young drivers making split second decisions at speed. It's quite impressive.

We finished 13th and while there is still plenty of work ahead, we're genuinely happy with the progress. Every weekend we're arriving with new ideas, learning more as a family team and leaving with an even clearer understanding of what we need to work on next.

Most importantly, Gavin climbed out of the kart with a huge smile and was incredibly proud of what he'd achieved.

This weekend we're back at Ipswich Kart Club, another opportunity for Gavin to continue learning, building confidence and putting everything we've worked on into practice.....race!

With an incredible field of 23 Cadet 9 drivers, there'll be plenty of close racing and valuable experience to gain. Every lap is another chance to improve and that's exactly what this season is all about.

We're excited to hit the track, enjoy the challenge and see where we stack up against such a quality field. A huge thank you to everyone who continues to support our journey. We can't wait to get into it!

What a weekend.

We went into Gavin's first Panelfab Queensland State Title knowing exactly what it was, a massive learning opportunity against some of the best Cadet 9 drivers in the country and learn we did!

Across the weekend, Gavin found almost nine tenths of a second, but more importantly, his driving took a huge step forward. His confidence grew, his awareness improved and the intensity of the competition really opened his eyes to what's possible in the sport.

And now he wants more.

In the final, Gavin was racing hard, making passes and pushing his limits. On the last lap, while fighting for one more position, he dropped a wheel off the track and had a little spin. A disappointing way to finish but that's racing and sometimes when you're pushing forward and testing your limits, these things happen.

We couldn't be prouder of his progress and attitude. He wasn't just circulating, he was racing, passing karts and fighting for more right to the final lap.

A massive thank you to everyone who offered advice, guidance and support throughout the weekend. We genuinely appreciate every bit of help we received. There are some great people in this sport, and we're grateful for those who took the time to help us move forward.

We came to learn. We leave faster, more confident, more aware, and very excited about what's ahead.

This weekend showed Gavin the level he wants to reach and left him more determined than ever to get there. 🏁
