Toohey’s News - 18th June 2026
* In Barry Toohey’s article today, he talks about how New Zealand Warriors forward Marata Niukore is the only senior signing that the Newcastle Knights have made for the 2027 season and beyond, especially with the premature retirement of Wil Sullivan. The club has all but ruled out offering outgoing veteran Centre Dane Gagai a last minute extension even though he still continues to be an attacking threat in the NRL at age 35 and is still adamant he will not retire. Veteran Forward Tyson Frizell has been pencilled in to fill in the vacant role left by Sullivan for 2027, but it depends on how he will finish this season and how the club will come to a financial agreement. Gagai alongside Tyson Gamble, Brodie Jones and Wilson De Courcey are all part of the departures list for the end of 2026.
* Pasami Saulo may not be able to play again this season due to suffering from a foot fracture he sustained earlier in the week and could miss 8-10 depending on surgery. Cody Hopwood comes in for the injured Saulo on the bench for tomorrow’s game against the Dragons and despite the former’s injury setback, Brodie Jones could come back in and other reserve forwards such as Lachlan Crouch or Peter Hola could come in for him.
* Under 21s Jersey Flegg coach Alex Moore and his assistant Joel Edwards have been sacked and have been replaced with former Knights old boy Wes Naiquama (brother of Kevin) and assistant Adam Blair with the Jersey Flegg squad sitting in at 11th spot after winning four from twelve games.
* Winger James Schiller will not be offered an extension at the Knights after 2027 which could see him leave the club earlier than expected due to being behind in form wingers Dom Young and Greg Marzhew and has permission to negotiate with other clubs with the Knights not standing in his way. Last season, Schiller rejected an offer from the Dragons.
* Centre could be another position vacant for the Knights should Kyle McCarthy decides to quit the club at the end of the season as he has until the end of this month to decide his future. Despite his strong showing in NSW Cup, McCarthy is signed for 2027 but has not seen any first grade appearances since his debut season in 2024 when being coached under Adam O’Brien, but that could soon change with the impending departure of Dane Gagai.
* Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Lucas are expected to be rested tomorrow night against the Dragons following their performances in Game 2 of Origin, should the former be rested, either Fletcher Sharpe or Hunt could fill in at fullback and Sandon Smith could move to five eighth with Sharpe moving to fullback. Francis Manuleleua is on standby for Lucas but with the injury to Saulo, Lucas might back up.
