The Weedy Seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) is one of Australia’s most extraordinary marine animals. It’s a fish closely related to seahorses.

Fascinating facts:

Size: Up to 45–46 cm long.
Habitat: Kelp forests, rocky reefs and seagrass beds, usually in relatively shallow coastal waters.
Diet: Tiny crustaceans, especially small shrimp.
Camouflage: Its leaf-like appendages help it blend into seaweed.
Reproduction: The male carries fertilised eggs attached underneath his tail until they hatch.
Conservation: Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN in its latest assessment, primarily because of habitat degradation and climate change

The leafy seadragon is one of Australia’s most extraordinary marine animals.

It’s a fish closely related to seahorses, found naturally only in southern Australian waters, including Western Australia.

Fascinating facts:

🐉 Its leaf-like appendages make it look like floating seaweed.
🐉 Usually around 20–35 cm, occasionally over 40 cm.
🐉 His home is Seagrass beds and kelp-covered reefs, generally at depths of 3–50 metres.
🐉 Feeds on tiny crustaceans, especially mysid shrimp.
🐉The male carries approximately 250 eggs attached to his tail until they hatch.
🐉 It is a protected marine species in Australia.

Can you see them around Perth?
Yes! Leafy seadragons occur along the southwest coast of Western Australia.
The best area is Esperance, BUT
Lots of them have been spotted around Yancheep area lately 😉

Let’s go diviiing! We had AMAZING conditions at Omeo wreck a few days ago 🤩
The water was very clear, flat, and we could observe so much marine life including cat fish, rays, octopus, sea horse…What a day 👌!
