Back on track to end the season!
After a full year off, we finally received and installed the replacement 2016 Yamaha R1M engine in April. We made the most of time off to have it back in the car for the 42nd Annual NSW Title at Dubbo and the final round at Western Sydney Speedway looking to pull double duty on May 16th.
This would be a short swansong before selling the blue Petty inspired Hyper to focus on the new car build. A new build with comfort in mind and a new engine package direction too.
With thanks to some help from Mark Heaton and our crew of ladies here at home, the Yamaha R1M engine was in and running just in time for the NSW Title on May 9th at Dubbo Speedway.
I ran the heats from the rear just to let it settle in, watching the guages and data carefully. All good by heat 3, so I gave it a good push.
Feature time: I started deep in 14th but managed to get home in 7th on a tough track that got tighter as the night went on. Pretty happy with that! Engine didn't miss a beat for the 20 laps at all so I know its ready to go from here.
With a week to turn it around, I had to take a step back and look at this from a different perspective.
Through the time off track I replaced our time worn Kirkey seat with a Butler Built full containment. It didn't fit anywhere near as nicely as the old one, and damn i regretted it on race night at Dubbo. I struggled getting in and out of the car. Being a short guy chassis with this seat, I just didn't feel safe. I simply couldn't get out swiftly, so if something went wrong I would be stuffed. I had more speed but wasn't game to get in the fight too hard. I did my laps and brought it home straight.
With that in mind I pulled the nomination for Sydney and let double duty go. Still took the car but only to show a potential buyer, wheel pack in support of the club and show the 4 sale markings on display. I contemplated racing but just couldn't do it.
Oh the irony though as Chippy had an issue in Heat 1. So we threw our short lil muppet mate in the seat and gave him the key. He didn't disappoint. Gave it a crack, got some laps in and pushed what he could out of a car he had never driven before. I'm sure it was foreign but the smile on his face made it all worth it as he bagged Hard Charger in the feature.
He showed up for us, so we showed up for him. That's what makes our sport great.
Now its time to regroup. The Petty throwback Hyper is poised to find its new owner as we sell it all off in the weeks ahead.
Thanks to those who make it all possible especially my loving family behind SFR.
