Serbian viticulture has grown significantly over the past fifteen years. This study analyses irrigation groundwater quality in the northern slopes of Fruška Gora. Twenty samples were collected from aquifers in Quaternary, Miocene and Pliocene sediments, along with springs in Paleozoic and Cretaceous formations and one well in Triassic sediments. Most waters were classified as HCO₃-Ca-Mg type. Irrigation suitability was evaluated using indices: SAR, Na%, PI, PS, MH, KI, IWQI. All 20 samples were excellent or suitable for irrigation based on SAR, Na%, and KI; most met PS and MH criteria, and PI rated all moderately suitable. IWQI classified samples as very good and good. GIS-based IDW maps visualized water quality, providing insight into groundwater suitability for northern Fruška Gora irrigation.

EFG was thrilled to take part in the Pau Geosciences Week, held in June 2026 in Pau, France, bringing together GEODAYS and LearnGeo 2026. The week highlighted the strategic role of geosciences and the subsurface in addressing today's major societal challenges, from the energy transition to environmental resilience.

The AVENIA GEODAYS, held at the Palais Beaumont on 16 and 17 June, brought together geoscience professionals and industry stakeholders, with EFG and SGF welcoming attendees at a joint booth. LearnGeo followed on 18 June with a full day of French-language talks and workshops for students, educators and industry speakers, covering topics from geothermal energy and natural hydrogen to offshore wind and mining's relationship with environmental protection.

As part of this LearnGeo pilot edition co-organised by SGF and EFG, we awarded a travel grant, sponsored by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), to Aboutarouk Ayoub, a PhD researcher in economic geology and remote sensing, supporting his participation in the event. Aboutarouk described it as a chance to connect with geologists working across industry and academia in Europe and gain a broader view of how geoscience feeds into the energy transition.

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is pleased to be part of the consortium of the EU-funded project BOREAS.

The project officially kicked off with an online meeting on 20 May 2026, where EFG was represented by Project Officer Tamás Miklovicz. This was followed by the in-person kick-off meeting, hosted by project partner Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen on 8–9 June 2026, where EFG was represented by Marko Komac.

Coordinated by the Luleå University of Technology, the BOREAS project will develop a new generation of intelligent, low-impact mining technologies to secure Europe's access to critical raw materials essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing. At the centre of the project is the Malmbjerg deposit in Greenland, one of the world's largest undeveloped molybdenum deposits, with valuable magnesium by-products.

EFG leads the development of BOREAS' ESG governance and compliance framework, ensuring that environmental and operational data are structured, monitored, and reported in line with internationally recognised standards. This includes defining ESG monitoring requirements, aligning project data with the UNFC and UNRMS frameworks, the EU Taxonomy and CRMA, and developing automated compliance reporting supported by independent verification.

In the later stages of the project, EFG leads the development of transparency dashboards, replication tools, and policy guidance to support the long-term uptake and replication of project results. Through stakeholder-focused digital platforms, compliance validation, and the preparation of replication and policy roadmaps, EFG helps establish BOREAS as a transferable model for transparent, internationally credible reporting in sustainable critical raw materials projects across Europe and beyond.

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has published a new position paper calling for a Modular European Framework for Subsurface Governance, warning that fragmented, commodity-based regulation is holding back Europe's energy transition and strategic autonomy.

Critical raw materials, geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen storage, and industrial minerals all compete for the same geological space, yet each is licensed under separate legislation and separate authorities. The result: longer project timelines, inconsistent standards, and growing uncertainty for investors in exactly the sectors Europe is relying on most to meet its 2030–2050 targets.

EFG's proposed framework would harmonise geological standards and data across Member States, embed certified professional geoscientists in the permitting process, and introduce risk-based, stage-gated permitting, while leaving land-use planning and final decisions firmly with national authorities. The paper points to existing national models, from Italy's single-authorisation procedure to Switzerland's use of accredited external experts, as evidence that a more coherent approach is achievable without overriding subsidiarity.

With input from its Panels of Experts on CCS and Hydrogen Geological Storage, Geothermal Energy, and Minerals and their Sustainable Use, EFG’s proposal is offered as a contribution to the upcoming review of the Hydrocarbons Licensing Directive and the implementation of the Critical Raw Materials Act and Net-Zero Industry Act.

The Board and Secretariat of the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) are deeply saddened by the passing of Luís Lopes, President of the Associação Portuguesa de Geólogos (APG), a distinguished academic, researcher, and dedicated advocate for the geosciences.

Luís devoted his career to advancing geological knowledge and inspiring generations of students and professionals.

Through his leadership of APG and his active involvement in EFG initiatives, he made a lasting contribution to both the Portuguese and European geoscientific communities. Luís' strong commitment to international collaboration was particularly evident through his important role in the successful organisation of the 5th International Professional Geology Conference (IPGC), jointly organised by ICOG, APG and EFG.

Beyond his professional achievements, Luís will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, enthusiasm, and commitment to our profession. Many of us had the privilege of working with him and sharing wonderful moments over the years.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all members of the Portuguese geoscience community. At EFG, we consider ourselves one family, and we deeply feel this loss within our geoscientific community. We stand close to all of you in this moment of grief.

Luís legacy will continue to inspire us in our work within EFG for many years to come.
