I am currently doing some more studying on back pain. It is the leading cause of days off work worldwide and one of the scariest things that can happen.
Back pain often feels as though it is a life sentence, restricting your activity and invading your life forever. However, like a lot of things, movement and exercise can (and research seems to showing does) help. Despite what you may think, in most cases, it will not make it worse. Studies in long distance runners with no back pain (and I mean those crazy people who run over 500 kilometers a year) show no difference in their back health when compared to the rest of us with no back pain.
Movement and some compression, rotation and torsion (the effects of running or walking on your spine) are thought to increase circulation and improve joint health. If you have back pain this can help to decrease your back pain.
Just a note, if you do have back pain make sure that walking or running do not increase your pain (a maximum of 2 min walk or jog should give you that answer), do not run before you can walk, and always seek medical advice if you are unsure or have severe or neurological symptoms.

As a Physiotherapist I have often been asked why I run, as it will “wear out my knees”. Oddly this has been a belief for many years. However there have been studies that have showed this not to be true. Most research has actually shown that runners have lower rates of knee osteoarthritis than sedentary people.
A study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine in 2008 followed runners and non-runners for almost 20 years; X-rays showed signs of arthritis in the knees of 20 percent of the runners, but 32 percent of the non-runners.
Studies have been done for running, but any consistent movement should have a similar effect.

Every second Monday of the month the GGC5K members sponsor a small caddy competition. Last week we added a pocket sized floating trophy.🙂. This small contribution is part of being a community.
Mondays are tough. Soften the blow with a beautiful run/walk/jog with friends and family. Clear the cobwebs away and enjoy the green grass. The GGC5K habit is a good one to catch. Never miss a Monday..
Life gets busy and we don't get to meet up with friends and family to catch up and chat. Why not combine your exercise and your socialising? Invite a friend to join you at GGC5K and have a walk/run/jog together!
Consistency is key, and exercise should be shared fun!
