Many of you know and love our CanSkate Director, Margret, whose dedication, kindness, and passion have touched so many skaters and families at the Ajax Skating Club over the years.

Last year, Margret was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, she has shown incredible strength through surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. She is now taking part in a groundbreaking clinical study and is the first Canadian to receive this medication.

To help support Margret and her family during this journey, her son has organized Mulligans for Margret, a golf fundraiser. If you’re able to participate, sponsor, donate, or simply help spread the word, your support would mean so much.

Margret has given so much to our skating community, and now it’s our turn to rally around her.

🏆 Coach of the Year – Sherri Desroches 🏆

Congratulations to Sherri Desroches, our 2025/26 Coach of the Year!

This season, Sherri exemplified what it means to be a leader. When our club needed someone to step up, she did so without hesitation, taking on both our CanSkate and PreStar/StarSkate programs while continuing to support skaters, families, and fellow coaches every step of the way.

From the moment she arrived at the rink until the end of the day, Sherri worked tirelessly to keep our programs running smoothly. She kept everyone organized, ensured every session was coordinated, and was always willing to lend a hand wherever help was needed. Even while on vacation, she remained dedicated to our club, organizing our competition and making sure every detail was taken care of.

Her commitment, professionalism, and passion for skating have had a tremendous impact on our club this season. The countless hours she devoted behind the scenes often went unseen, but they never went unappreciated.

Sherri’s dedication to our skaters and her unwavering support of the Ajax Skating Club have made this recognition more than deserved.

❤️ The Veronica MacIntosh Memorial Award ❤️

The Veronica MacIntosh Memorial Award is one of the most meaningful honours presented by the Ajax Skating Club. This award recognizes a StarSkater who embodies the qualities that Veronica valued most: perseverance, determination, passion for figure skating, outstanding sportsmanship, and a positive attitude both on and off the ice.

This year’s recipient has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their skating journey, continually striving to master new skills, overcoming challenges with resilience, and representing the Ajax Skating Club with grace and elegance at competitions. Their dedication to the sport and love of skating serve as an inspiration to their fellow skaters and coaches alike.

This award recognizes a Program Assistant who has demonstrated exceptional dedication throughout the season through their positive attitude, strong leadership, outstanding attendance, and commitment to supporting our Pre-Can and CanSkaters.

Their willingness to go above and beyond by volunteering for additional sessions and serving as a positive role model has made a lasting impact on our skaters, coaches, and club community.

Each year, we are honoured to recognize two incredible athletes within our Special Olympics skating program—one CanSkater and one StarSkater—who truly embody the spirit of skating.

This year’s recipients were chosen because of the way they show up to the rink each week: with a positive attitude, a willingness to keep trying and grow their skills, and consistent attendance. More than anything, they bring energy, determination, and kindness to every session, helping create a supportive and encouraging environment for everyone around them.

Our StarSkaters are athletes working through the STARSkate pathway, developing their skills, free-skate, and dance elements as they progress through their skating journey. This award celebrates skaters who consistently demonstrate a positive attitude, perseverance in skill development, strong attendance, and excellent ice etiquette. These athletes arrive ready to work hard, embrace challenges, and support a positive training environment for everyone on the ice.

These skaters come to the rink ready to learn, work hard through challenges, and set a wonderful example for their peers both on and off the ice.
