This is advice every hockey player needs to hear.

Scott Spencer, Assistant Coach at Mercyhurst Women’s Hockey Mercyhurst University, was at the 2026 SDR Female Showcase and shared some straight talk on how athletes should handle mistakes on the ice. How you respond to a mistake tells a coach more about you than the mistake itself.

Female hockey is growing, and the people watching from the bench can feel it.
We asked an assistant coach .34 from Colgate Women's Ice Hockey where they see the women’s game going, and the answer was simple: up.
More athletes are pushing the pace.
More programs are paying attention.
More opportunities are being created for players who are ready to compete, develop, and be seen.
That is why events like the SDR Female Scouting Summit matter. They put serious athletes in front of the people who understand where the game is headed.
The future of female hockey is growing, and the next generation is already proving it.

Tara Parsons, Mother of Madison Parsons #12, Captain of 2013 Coastal

"As a parent of a passionate hockey player, I was so impressed with The Shield Academy that my 13-year-old daughter attended last week.

From day one, she was treated like a professional athlete. The expectations were high, the standards were clear, and the accountability was outstanding. The week kicked off with professional headshots in full hockey gear, instantly making the girls feel like they were part of something special. From there, it was a perfect balance of on-ice skill development, off-ice team-building activities, and a team practice that allowed the players to get to know one another and learn each other’s styles of play.
The rest of the week was packed with highly competitive games that challenged every player while providing an incredible learning experience. The coaching staff was exceptional, and having PWHL players involved made the experience even more inspiring for Maddy and her teammates. They weren’t just learning the game—they were learning from women who have reached the highest level of professional hockey.

The week wrapped up with an amazing awards banquet hosted by Jenna, whose message truly connected with the girls. She spoke to them in a way that was motivating, encouraging, and empowering. The night ended with a dance party, which Maddy absolutely loved—a perfect way to celebrate an unforgettable week.

Watching my daughter compete at a high level, develop her skills under knowledgeable coaches, build confidence, and make lifelong friendships… what more could a hockey mom ask for?

Was I skeptical going into the week? Absolutely. With so many opportunities available for female hockey players today, it’s hard to know which programs truly deliver. But after experiencing The Shield Academy firsthand, I can confidently say there isn’t another program that offers the same value or the same “bang for your buck.”

The Shield Academy exceeded every expectation we had. Maddy came home a better hockey player, a more confident young woman, and with friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

We can’t wait to be back next year!"

A huge THANK YOU to our incredible SDR Academy staff. ❤️

Events like this simply would not be possible without the countless hours, early mornings, late nights, and behind the scenes work that goes into making every detail come together.

From coaching on the bench, organizing behind the scenes, supporting families, and creating an unforgettable experience for every player, our staff continually goes above and beyond. More importantly, they serve as mentors and role models, helping create memories these young athletes will carry with them for years to come.

We are incredibly grateful for the passion, energy, and commitment each of you brings to our programs. Thank you for everything you do to make weekends like this possible. We couldn’t do it without you. 💚🏒

Coast to coast, Team Coastal showed what The Shield is all about. 🌊🏒

From the first puck drop to the final whistle, this group competed with passion, supported one another, and represented their region with pride. The friendships built, lessons learned, and memories made will last long after the tournament ends.

Thank you, Team Coastal, for making The Shield an unforgettable week so far.
