Blast from the past!

I drew this piece all the way back in the early 1980s. To be honest, I was never completely happy with a few spots on it and always meant to redo it—but I just never did!

This drawing brings back memories of an amazing era. The National Fitness Centre, National Boxing Club, and National Kickboxing Club were all housed together under one roof. This was right when Willie deWit was training under Mansoor Esmail, first for the Olympics and then as he prepared to transition into his professional career.

Setting the record straight: 🥊
I noticed a current fighting promotion claiming their recent event set the record for the highest Muay Thai, kickboxing, and boxing crowd attendance in Western Canada. NOPE! They drew about 2,500 people. Back in the day, Willie would draw massive crowds of 7,000 spectators under promoter Rod Proudfoot. That is almost three times the support! Willie’s followers were unmatched.

Fast forward to today, and Willie deWit is now a sitting judge. Talk about a legacy!
