MUSSELS 101 - LONGLINES
PEI Mussels grow in mussel socks that are hand tied onto thick lines attached to anchored or moored buoy rope; this is called the longline system.
The longline system keeps the socked mussels suspended in our nutrient-rich waters – mussels never touch the ocean floor, preventing grit and sediment accumulation.
Mussel farmers continually head out to monitor growth, keep the mussels protected, and add increased flotations to the longline system to keep the socks suspended above the bottom as they increase in size and weight.

It wasn't until the 1970s that mussels started being farmed here in Prince Edward Island.
Since then, the mussel industry has become a vital sector of PEI's rural economy, representing 80% of Canadian mussel production!
Oh and as for the pic -- yeah, YUM! :)

DID-YOU-KNOW...
Our PEI mussel farmers collect mussel seeds in the wild, sort them, grade them, place them into socks, and then bring the mussels back to the water.
They maintain the mussels for over a year or so until they've grown to market size. Once harvested, they are stripped from their socks, de-clumped, cleaned, have their beards removed, and are visually inspected.
And all of this is done very gently to protect our world-famous mussels before they reach your plates!
