Some photographs become more meaningful with time. This is one of them. ❤️
Johnny Gaudreau had just delivered one of the most unforgettable moments in Calgary Flames history a Game 7 overtime winner inside the Saddledome.
And waiting for him as he came off the ice was Sean Monahan.
Look at the first picture.
Sean is standing there waiting for his best friend. Johnny walks toward him, and before the celebration even becomes an embrace, their heads come together. For a moment, it feels like the noise of the building disappears.
Then look at the second picture.
That smile on Johnny’s face.
That hug.
That friendship.
It wasn’t simply one teammate congratulating another on scoring a huge goal.
It was Sean and Johnny.
Two young men who grew up together in Calgary. Teammates who shared the pressure, expectations, victories, disappointments, long flights, practices, laughs and countless memories that come with spending years chasing the same dream.
Sean wasn’t on the ice with Johnny when that puck went in.
But he was there waiting for him.
And knowing what we know today, there is something incredibly emotional about seeing Johnny walk into Sean’s arms with that enormous smile on his face.
None of us knew how precious photographs like these would eventually become.
That’s the heartbreaking beauty of pictures. They freeze a few seconds of our lives that we assume we’ll have the opportunity to experience again.
Another game.
Another celebration.
Another hug.
Another chance to say, “I love you, buddy.”
Until one day, we realize those ordinary moments were never ordinary at all.
Johnny Gaudreau gave Calgary hockey fans countless memories, but behind the player everyone called Johnny Hockey was a son, brother, husband, father, teammate and friend who was deeply loved.
And in these two photographs, you can see that love.
Not through words.
Through the way Sean waited for him.
Through the way Johnny leaned into him.
Through the way they held each other.
And through a smile that, thankfully, will live forever in photographs like this one.
Some friendships are bigger than hockey. Some moments are bigger than the game. And some hugs become priceless with time.
Sean & Johnny. ❤️
Forever teammates. Forever friends. Forever a part of Calgary. 🕊️🔥
