Provides a forum for members and friends of the Salt Spring Island Tango group - Por el Amor al Tango Beginners welcome. of the month (Feb. through Nov.)

Due to Covid-19 all practicas and milongas are cancelled til further notice. Regular Tuesday night practicas at All Saints by the Sea Church, 110 Park Dr. $5 drop-in. Occasional classes with visiting teachers.

3rd Sat. milongas (tango social dances) at All Saints by the Sea Church, 110 Park Dr., Ganges, from 4 - 7 pm - $10. Guest DJ's from Vancouver Island and beyond! Occasional guest teachers from across Canada and Buenos Aires.

We are so very pleased to announce our November milonga weekend; November 13 and 14.

Sandra Nacacche and Jorge Lopez will once again travel to Saltspring for a weekend of dance. They arrive Friday, November 13, and will be available for private lessons on Friday and Saturday morning. Please contact Laura Klein at 250-537-4077 to schedule your private lesson with these champion dancers. Private lessons costs are as follows:
1 Hour 3 Hours 5 Hours
$100/hr – 1 teacher $95/hr – 1 teacher $90/hr – 1 teacher
$160/hr – 2 teachers $155/hr – 2 teachers $150/hr – 2 teachers

Sandra and Jorge will hold a workshop prior to the milonga from 2:45 – 4:00. The cost for the pre-milonga workshop is $20/person.
The milonga will begin directly after from 4:00-7:00. The milonga cost is $20/person.
Sandra and Jorge will perform during the milonga, and we would appreciate a small donation toward the performance cost. There will be a performance donation jar at the front desk.

Saltspring’s workshop will be continued (Part 2) prior to the Crofton Meet-in-the-Middle Milonga at the Crofton Community Centre on the following day, Sunday, 12:00-1:15. Crofton’s milonga begins directly after the workshop. The Crofton workshop is also $20/person.

Our DJ for the event is Yves Mayrand. We are pleased to have Yves back on Saltspring to DJ at the event. Following is Yves’ bio:
"My first experience with Argentine tango music and dance goes back to 1996 with the Forever Tango show then touring in Montreal. I have been a tango music afficionado and a tango dancer ever since. Over the years, I have amassed a vast collection of tango music recordings and spent countless hours listening to them. However, I particularly enjoy sharing with other dancers some of the very best and most danceable tango tunes that make one like to step on the dance floor and enjoy a great tanda. My lovely dance and life partner Catherine Singleton-Bowers has been my muse and trusted critic for my tango music choices. Siempre tango y bien tangamente."

Saltspring’s Laura Klein will host a potluck dinner after the Saturday milonga at her home located at 2036 North End Road. For more information about the potluck, you can respond to this email or contact Laura directly at 250-537-4077.

One of our Victoria tanguera friends has reserved a double room with a kitchen for Saturday night. She is looking for someone to share the room and expenses. If you're interested in sharing, kindly contact Darlene at [email protected], and I'll connect you two.

Meet-in-the-Middle Milonga!
Where: Crofton Community Centre, 8104 Musgrave St., Crofton
When: Sunday, October 18th 1:00 to 4:00 PM
Who: Our DJ for October is David Gurr
Cost: $20

Crofton Community Centre has a superb and huge wooden dance floor, good sound, a supercharged air conditioning system, and a view of the harbour if you care to look. We are delighted to welcome David Gurr as our DJ for our October Meet-in-the-Middle Milonga!

David Gurr says: "In January 2027 it will be 30 years since what Diane calls “the Church of Tango” first snared me into its embrace. I only stayed past Lesson 1 because of the music. I bought a CD at A&B Sound: Mi Buenos Aires Querida, with Daniel Barenboim playing Astor Piazzolla. Everything about music is subjective. For the little it’s worth, in my Tango musical catechism I believe:
----Rhythm is the engine
----but Melody is the lifeblood.
----There should be room to breathe between selections.
----Cortinas should not be danceable.
-----Repeat: Melody is the lifeblood.
For 30 years it has kept me dancing with wonderfully kind women -- and forging a legion of line-of-dance friendships. Muchas gracias to you all.”

Danny has been teaching since 2015. Never a natural dancer, he uses an engineering mindset to break down the concepts of flow, dynamism, and feeling, into their embodied movement components. He knows what it is to struggle with "moves", and focuses instead on creating effective partnership in the dance for more mutual freedom. Moves happen when we release the body into relaxed movement, and pay attention to timing, flow, and especially to each other!
Danny specializes in close embrace and Estilo Milonguero tango, but enjoys working in all embrace styles and sizes.

Keith's biography: "Keith’s introduction to Argentine tango began in 2001, thanks to the encouragement of Michael Young and Beatrix Satzinger. They persuaded Keith to join their Salt Spring class for tango lessons, which proved to be a pivotal moment in his career in Argentine tango. Following this initial experience, Keith became their teaching assistant in Mexico, further deepening his connection to the art of tango.

From 2002 to 2007, Keith made annual trips to Buenos Aires, spending three months each year immersed in studying and dancing tango. During his early visits, his first instructor in Argentina was Eduardo Saucedo, and in 2005, he had the opportunity to study with the renowned Carlos Gavito.

In 2005, while in Buenos Aires, Keith received a special invitation to step inside the DJ booth at Club Gricel. This experience marked the beginning of his exploration into the world of tango music. Guided by Carlos Gavito’s inspiration, Keith developed a deep appreciation for the history of tango music and learned how to curate tandas that enhance dancers’ enjoyment and understanding.

If you have attended a milonga DJ’ed by Keith, you will be familiar with several of his signature elements: Keith has a particular fondness for the Golden Years of tango music. He is renowned for his themed cortinas, adding a distinctive flair to each event. Milongas led by Keith traditionally conclude with two versions of "La Comparsita"—because, in his words, one simply isn’t enough."

Hi everyone,
We welcome you to join us for our September 12th milonga at All Saints By-the-Sea from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. September's returning guest DJ is Helen Prince. $20/person.

Shannon and Shane will generously host a potluck dinner after the milonga, at their home at 134 Douglas Road. Shane will pick up your potluck dinner offerings at the church parking lot between 3:30 and 4:00. Rideshare if possible. Kindly park only on the right hand side of Douglas Rd, and do not block the neighbours' driveways. Walk down the gravel driveway, pass by the blue house, and continue down to the white and black house. Walk around or through the garden to the designated dinner and dance area. Saltspring's David Wooten will DJ the potluck dance.
