Even when you're focused on the shot, don't lose sight of the dive.
In a case reported to DAN's incident database, a diver carrying camera equipment lost track of both their buddy and their depth while filming. The dive plan called for a maximum depth of 98 ft (30 m), but the diver unknowingly descended to 174 ft (53 m). Feeling dizzy, they checked their computer and realized just how deep they had gone. The diver panicked and began a rapid ascent.
This case is a reminder that photography/videography add task loading to a dive. When a diver's attention shifts away from the fundamentals, it's easier to lose awareness of depth, gas supply, and other critical factors. Before bringing a camera on a dive, buoyancy control and situational awareness should be second nature.
No photo or video is worth losing track of the dive plan and compromising your safety. Read the full case summary at dan.org/distraction-unplanned-exposure-and-a-lucky-outcome/
