Kung-fu and faith - long term hard work

In Kung-fu we work hard for a long time before we see results. It takes us months, sometimes a whole year or even two, to get ready for a grading. We train ourselves every week to get better at exercising, at learning techniques, at mastering our health, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The Bible is our guidebook for life and faith: it teaches us how to do life better, so we study it, like our forms and techniques, and we practice it so that we’ll get it right down into our muscle memory where we can live it from memory, so it can guide and help and support us even when we’re too stressed out to think straight.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us that our work will pay off, if we keep to it and don’t give up.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

And when we give Jesus our lives and follow Him, he promises us that even if we make a ton of mistakes along the way, that He will never give up on us. Once we’re part of His family, His team, He never lets us go.

Isaiah 40:31 - “…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Servanthood in Community - Galatians 5:13 - “Serve one another humbly in love.”

A strong community thrives when people are willing to serve one another.
Jesus calls us to a life of servanthood—to look beyond ourselves, notice the needs of others, and be willing to help even when no one is watching.
Sometimes serving others means doing the big things. But often, it looks much simpler: seeing something that needs to be done and stepping up, taking on a little extra job and helping behind the scenes. Doing what you can to make things a little better for the people around you.

Those things may seem small, but they matter.

Adrian and Basheer here and many others have shown they care about our club and the people in it. We want to thank them for being willing to help out in small ways, installing sound dampening panels, vacuuming mats after class, scrubbing scuffs off the walls so they look white and bright again! Just to name a few things!

That kind of attitude is a reflection of the character we hope to develop through our ministry.

Thank you, Adrian and Basheer and all who serve in small ways, we appreciate you!

Up against a big scary thing? - James 2:18 "I will show you my faith by my deeds."

Have you ever had the persistent feeling that God was calling you to do something? Often what God asks of us isn’t easy or comfortable, sometimes it takes pure obedience. In these situations we can feel a bit like Moses who God asked to go do a big scary thing. He did what we often do when asked to do something challenging: he gave excuses and told God why he wasn’t the right person for that task. But God had a job for him and Moses had a purpose, even if he cringed at what God asked him to do; he was afraid and human just like us! He knew of times when he had made big mistakes before and remembered his shortcomings.

Sometimes in kung fu we are asked to do something we haven’t done before. It is normal to feel reluctant to go ahead to try and do it. We sometimes stop and mentally quit, telling ourselves we aren’t good enough or haven’t had the proper training yet. There is an upcoming grading and maybe we are feeling intimidated and less than confident in our abilities.

Often in life, we are confronted with tasks that seem too hard or too big and scary but if God chose that task specifically for us He must know something about us that we haven't realized yet.

The next time we want to say no to a challenge that God has presented to us, remember that He tells us he has great plans for us. Maybe we can shift our minds to be excited and run towards that big scary thing knowing God is by our side. When we are challenged and want to back out, remember how God used Moses to impact an entire nation! We can choose to step out in faith too and face these big scary challenges.

Self-control is the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behavior in the face of temptations and impulses. It means controlling anger before anger controls you, refusing to allow another person's aggression to determine your behavior, choosing the response that protects peace.

In sparring, self-control is usually described as controlling your strikes so that they come close but do not hit your opponent. That’s why we train ourselves not just to have fast punches but to be intentional about where we throw them and how far they go. We train not just to have high powerful kicks but also to be able to pull them back when we need to.

When writing about what to look for in a Christian leader, Paul wrote in Titus 1:8 “Instead he must be hospitable, devoted to what is good, sensible, upright, devout, and self-controlled.”

Paul is telling us to be people who are self-controlled and not out of control. To be disciplined in our actions, reactions and our words.

Developing self-control takes practice and focus. When we train ourselves to control our strikes, we are also practicing mental and emotional self-control. We are learning that strength isn’t simply having the ability to act—it’s having the discipline to control that ability and choose when and how to use it.

With the start of a new school year many young people, parents and teachers might be feeling anxious. Laoshi Ruby shared with us a verse to help us when we are feeling stressed.

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This verse is reminding us that in every situation we find ourselves in, whatever we have upcoming, we should pray and give our worries to God to allow the peace that he has for us to guard our hearts and minds from things that aren’t from Him, like worry or anxiety.

In those times we need to learn to put our trust in Him. This isn’t always easy to do but we can learn with lots of practice! She shared how at a tournament she was feeling nervous before competing and performing in front of so many people and judges. Before going up she prayed for peace and focus and God helped her through it! She ended up doing very well, earning a gold medal with a perfect score from the judges! By praying and giving her worries to God, God helped her by giving her peace to perform what she had practiced well.

We can know that He is with us, He has a plan, that He can help us through, we just need to ask. We wish everyone a good start to the school year!
