Yesterday we gathered for week three of The Elements of Ritual, my six-week ceremonial training, with participants joining from all over the world.

🔥This week was fire. We explored its symbolism, its themes, its metaphors and mythology, and the surprising places it shows up in our lives.

I invited everyone to think beyond the flame. Fire isn’t only the candle or the hearth. It’s the heat that rises in your body as you move and sweat. It’s the sun on your face. It’s warmth, transformation, illumination, wherever we find it.

And then, yesterday morning, I looked out into our backyard and there it was. Our katsura tree, ablaze in reds, oranges and golds, holding every colour of the flame from our morning ritual. What a gift it is to see fire everywhere!

Want to explore the elements with me? ✨

🔥 The Elements of Ritual returns in May 2027: six weeks of ceremonial training through earth, air, fire, water and ether.

🌿 Or walk the full year with me and Grief guide & death doula in A Year of Seasonal Ceremony. We’ll gather eight times through 2027 to honour each seasonal turning and the in-between moments, moving together around the wheel of the year.

**Last call: only a few spots left for Saturday 🕯️**

Grief doesn’t follow a straight line. It moves through us in a long arc, through anniversaries and empty chairs, quiet mornings and the moments no one else sees.

This Saturday, I’m teaching **Rituals for Grief & Loss: Building Your Ceremonial Muscles**, a virtual masterclass in support of the End of Life Doula Association of Canada. Part of the proceeds go back to this nonprofit, which is leading the way for end-of-life doulas across the country.

Together we’ll:
✨ Explore the different types of grief
✨ Learn how to mark and bring ritual into the long arc of grief
✨ Name the silent thresholds and invisible moments that often go unacknowledged
✨ Find ways to hold these moments for ourselves and for those we care for

This session is for end-of-life doulas, grief counsellors, care providers, and anyone holding space for people who are grieving. It’s also for anyone who wants to better support themselves as they walk with their own grief.

We’ll connect with ourselves, with each other, and with the world around us.

**Session two of Elements of Ritual: Water 💧**

Today in our six-week ceremonial training, we explored the beautiful and complicated element of water.

We opened and closed our gathering by choosing a vessel with meaning — a teacup, a mug, something that held a connection to a person, a memory, a place, an emotion. We poured water into it, added citrus to wake up taste (so often tied to water), and drank as we set our intention together.

By the end, we drank from that same vessel again — carrying the water element back in new, curious ways. Building our ritual muscles, one week at a time.

I chose a teacup inherited from my grandmother, who died the year I was born. When I drink from it, I feel a sense of belonging, of history, of ancestry — a relationship with a grandmother I never got to know in real life, but who I get to bring into my ritual practice anyway.

How do you connect with the element of water? 🌊

🍂 Today we gathered for the Fall Equinox — the first of our seasonal circles in A Year of Seasonal Ceremony, the year-long cohort I co-host with Grief guide & death doula

We came together to sit with the symbols, themes, and language of this threshold season — and to co-create rituals that help us step across it.

Each of us was invited to bring an object or piece of nature that held both summer’s energy and fall’s arrival. I brought a branch from my Katsura tree.

I’ve watched this tree move through its whole yearly cycle — buds unfurling into full green summer leaves, then turning through yellow, red, and orange as autumn takes hold, until every leaf lets go for winter. And then, without fail, new buds begin again.

Holding that branch today, I could feel both things at once: the warmth of summer I’m still carrying, and the intentions of fall I’m ready to step into. It helped me mark this threshold in my own life — naming what I want to carry forward, and letting go of what I’m ready to leave behind.

✨ We’ve opened spots for A Year of Seasonal Ceremony 2027 — a year spent guiding a community through the Wheel of the Year at all eight turning points. We gather virtually, eight times across the year, as a community of care — with ritual and ceremony at the very heart of it.

If you’ve been feeling the pull toward more intentional rhythm in your year, this is an invitation. 🌗

Finally sitting down for my afternoon ritual ~ my teacup chosen to match the wonkiness of jet lag and the first week of school 🤪

In this little sliver of time, it is such a gift to crack open The Little Book of Loss Rituals by Stephanie Sarazin and feel a soul connection with her as she writes on the importance of ritual during times of loss and grief.

There are so many parallels between her journey and mine ~ it’s been like a homecoming to connect with each other across North America and find these moments we’ve each been living, in our own way.

I love supporting other authors as they bring their books and stories into the world. This one is a gift to everyone who finds it. 📖✨

Enrollment is now open for Ceremonial Training: The Elements of Ritual 🌿 💧 🔥 🌬️ ✨

Learn to design your own rituals and craft your own ceremonies.

This 6-week live, virtual training is for anyone who's ever felt the pull to mark a moment with intention but didn't know where to begin, and for those already holding space who want to go deeper.

This is a practice, not a theory. Over six weeks we'll deepen your connection to the elements, the symbols, and the stories that are the building blocks of every ritual ~ and you'll build the muscle to work with them yourself, designing ceremony for your own life and learning to hold it for others.

And you won't do it alone. We gather live every Sunday, in a small, tight-knit circle that becomes its own community of care.

Earth. Water. Fire. Air. Ether.
Six Sundays.
Five elements.
One ceremony we build together.

Look what showed up at the World Humanist Congress in Ottawa this week. ✨

I was so honoured that 160 copies of my book *Ritual Without Religion* were purchased by a member of Humanist Canada and donated to this event with Humanists International, bringing together humanists from around the world.

This year’s theme was Humanism as Resistance ~ a response to rising Christian nationalism and alt-right religious narratives, and a reminder of what humanism actually offers: a community of people who want to leave this world better than they found it.

Seeing my book out in the wild, in the hands of humanists, was a dream come true! Thank you to Craig Barlow and Humanist Canada for making this possible. The ripple effects from one small book, now sitting in the hands of humanists across 48 countries, are immeasurable.

For me, ritual is about stopping, paying attention and creating intention. So when I published a book earlier this summer, I knew I would find small, meaningful moments to stop, pay attention and creating intention!

On August 13th, I'm sitting by the fire with Chloe Hunter at Rivendell Retreat Centre on Bowen Island for an evening of conversation, exploring what it means to build ritual on our own terms.

We'll be asking questions like: Why is ritual needed now more than ever? How can ceremony show up in ordinary life? What becomes possible when a community decides to mark things together?

It's free, it's open to everyone, and no preparation is needed. Copies of Ritual Without Religion will be there if you'd like one signed. Link in bio to RSVP.

~

And for those of you who aren't close by, I'm available for a virtual fireside chat! If you have a book club, an organization, a hospice team, or a community group that wants to explore Ritual Without Religion together, I'd love to join you.

Send me a DM to set something up.

The need to mark our moments with meaning is more important than ever. Let's dive in together. 🔥

There’s more than one way to say goodbye.

Most people picture scattering cremated remains (aka “ashes”) into a body of water, or letting them fly into the wind, or keeping an urn on the mantel. But there’s another way that doesn’t get talked about as much: trenching.

A trenching ceremony involves digging a hole in the earth, choosing a spot that’s meaningful, placing the remains into the ground, covering them with soil, then marking the spot with flowers, maybe a letter or note, or a natural marker that honours the experience.

Today, I helped my dad release the remainder of his dear friend. We had an ocean scattering ceremony last weekend (see Seeking Ceremony 💛🖤 for the full story) but there was a lot of cremated remains to deal with and he didn’t know what to do with them.

So I went into our forest, found a quiet spot away from people and growing vegetation, and dug a hole. I placed the remaining ashes inside, covered them with soil, and chose flowers from our garden: yellow roses for friendship, pink roses for love, white hydrangeas for peace, and rosemary for remembrance. The same flowers from our scattering ceremony.

It was simple and it was meaningful. Not holding on to the grief, but releasing of it ~ letting it move through us, the way grief needs to.

⬇️

What have you done with cremated remains? Where have you sent them, or laid them to rest? Let’s normalize these stories and inspire people with options!

Also ~ my dear friend Christa Ovenell | Death Educator offers a free webinar on what to do with cremated remains if you want more ideas 💞
