There’s nothing quite like getting ready for a take while makeup is putting bloody eye drops directly into your eye.

Right before we rolled this shot on *Tales from the Void*, makeup applied the drops so my eye would actually “bleed” during the take.

A few seconds later: Action.

Actors often label a scene dramatic, angry or sad and then play that label from beginning to end.

After coaching more than 7,000 self-tapes, I’ve seen this turn potentially layered dramatic work into something much more predictable.

But the conflict is usually already written into the scene.
Your opportunity is to discover what else is alive underneath it.

What do you still love? What are you protecting? Where can there be lightness, play or humour without turning the scene into a joke?

That contrast creates subtext and keeps the performance from becoming one-note.

I didn’t book any of these roles, but for a day or two, each one was mine.

I read the text, imagined the world, found the voice, the body, the clothes and the point of view. I rehearsed. I recorded the little mini-movie. Then I sent it out and let it go.

The booking was never the only win. Casting saw my work. I sharpened my craft. I told the story. The outcome was never mine to control. My preparation, rehearsal and audition were.

Make the audition your goal. Make it your mini-masterpiece. Love every strange, temporary life you get to live, because you are an actor.
