The mind shifts before the body moves.

He's not an athlete — not yet. He's a young kid going through a growth spurt, a little clumsy, finding his way. But he loves combat. He loves the rings. And he shows up.

So I coach him the same way I'd coach any youth athlete. The movement. The strength. And the belief behind it.

This is an aspect of what mental training looks like in a young person's body.

I've watched it for 26 years. An athlete dips, a coach panics, a parent worries — and the move is always the same. Add. Push. Grind harder.

It's the most common mistake in performance. And it's costing more than people realize. A tired body can't do what you're asking of it. A fried nervous system can't react. A maxed-out kid can't grow into the athlete they could be.

The work most people skip is the work that makes everything else pay off.

The fix is simpler than you think. Harder to commit to, though.

This isn't a typical boxing drill — and that's the point.

Teaching youth to take someone's back, control the position, and work into a choke trains something beyond technique. It builds motor skills, body awareness, and prepares them for real scenarios they might actually face.

I'm not an MMA coach. But I believe in preparing young athletes for more than just the ring.

𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙮. 𝙎𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙬.

The punch initiates. The foot follows. That timing is what keeps you out of danger and puts you in position for the next shot.

Three drills. Two principles. Step in and out with the jab. Step in, drop out, right hand — the punch leads the movement. Body shots off the pivot — the foot leads, but the opposite foot stays planted so you can execute cleanly.
