The NCAA’s new rules have materially changed how time spent in junior hockey affects your eligibility, potentially changing the math for midget players and families. Nothing needs to be settled today, but as the season gets started for midget players in the US and Canada, it’s worth taking a closer look at what should actually be driving that decision.

More reps. More exposure. A head start before the eligibility clock even begins. That’s the appeal of junior hockey for a lot of families. And it’s real. But it’s not the whole picture.

Club and prep hockey aren’t a warm-up act for juniors. It’s a real jump in level. That jump deserves more thought than, “it’s just next season.”

Faster pace. Older competition. Entire leagues full of players who are trying to take your spot. Development isn’t guaranteed just because you made the jump. Along with playing time, it is earned inside a system *built to win games*.

Junior hockey does not ease anyone in.

The 5-in-5 rule changed when your NCAA eligibility clock starts. It did not change what it takes to be ready for junior hockey. Those are two different questions - often with different answers.

There’s no universal right answer here. Only the right answer for you…or your player.

It’s worth taking the time to find it.

We worked with Andrew for many years, and this is exactly the kind of outcome we love to see.

ESG is beyond proud to announce that John Crawford has committed to the US Military Academy at West Point to play NCAA Division I hockey.

This isn’t just a commitment to a program — it’s a commitment to serve his country.

The 2007-born defenceman out of Culver Military Academy will spend next season honing his game with the Blackfalds Bulldogs in the BCHL before reporting to West Point in 2027.

A native of Greenwood Village, CO, Crawford’s journey — from club hockey, to prep school, to the BCHL, to the Academy — is one of the most meaningful we’ve had the privilege to be part of.
