A lot of people get this wrong…
❌ MYTH #1: Contact improv is sensual, sexual or romantic
✅ That is not the intention of our space. CI does draw on all the senses, but we move to create, explore and play, and move in contact for the fun of the dance, not with an intention of romance. We also support people in increasing their capacity for platonic touch, especially when they’re unfamiliar with touch that isn’t romanticized. When touch doesn’t have to be romantic or sexual, so many awesome possibilities open up in movement and in connection!
❌ MYTH #2: You need to bring a partner
✅ Nope. You can come alone. In fact, most people do. We dance with different people throughout our time together, and you’re free to choose when and with whom you connect.
❌ MYTH #3: You have to be super open, confident or “good at improvising”
✅ Absolutely not. You can be shy, curious, cautious of touch or have absolutely no idea what you’re doing. We’ll support you in getting familiar with the space, meeting our supportive community, getting started, and checking in with your nervous system along the way ✨
❌ MYTH #4: It’s just a bunch of hippies rolling around on the floor 😄
We have CEOs, gamers, tech professionals, professional movers, artists, influencers, and everything in between in our space. We value freedom, community and cooperation, and sure, we question mainstream norms, but we also value thoughtful dialogue, curiosity, critical thinking, and creating a space where people can show up as themselves, without having to subscribe to a particular lifestyle or worldview.
So if you’ve been wondering whether contact improv is for you… now there’s really only one way to find out 😉
Come try it out at our Wednesday jam this week, we’d love to meet you!
