What do swimming lessons have to do with social skills ⁉️

One of our favourite things about group lessons is watching the friendships that grow along the way, between carers, little ones and the wider Water Babies Canada community 💙

But these lessons are also valuable opportunities for our swimmers to develop their social skills. For many of them, it’s their first structured experience outside their home surrounded by peers, other carers, teachers, and lifeguards.

These early experience helps your child learn to:

For many of our swimmers structured lessons first experience outside home and with others (teachers, lifeguards, other carers, peers).

💬 Follow instructions – listening and responding to their teacher
⏰ Be patient – waiting their turn to practice a skill or join an activity
✨ Share – toys, equipment and space with others
💦 Cooperate – learning and playing alongside their peers

Alexandra joined the Water Babies Family 10 years ago, and little did we know the impact she would have.

She started with us as our first Customer Service Manager when we were working out of a basement you had to reach through a Harry Potter-style hidden door! She then took a transcontinental flight to the UK to train as a Water Babies teacher before becoming the first Water Babies Canada Franchisee in 2018.

Since then, she has grown her business, taken a massive leadership role amongst the Water Babies Canada Network, and built a family, with three beautiful daughters and another little one on the way. She has balanced being an incredible mother with leading her team and running her business.

Alexandra has always prioritized her team, supporting their development and helping them grow into leadership roles of their own. That same tenacity can be seen in how she continues to push her business forward, always finding a way to a “yes”, even when “no” is staring her down.

Just this year, she secured 5 new pools in just six months as part of an expansion plan and coordinated the launch for all of them!

She always strives to get better in every aspect of her business, taking feedback, and constantly improving. This led to her taking on a second franchise area in June 2025, the Simcoe region!

This drive has also made her a go-to resource for our network. She shares her experience, gets involved in working groups, and is always willing to help fellow franchisees.

Beyond our network, Alexandra has built strong connections within the communities where she swims, making a real impact on the families and early years organizations she works with.

We are so lucky to have her as a part of our family and network and can't wait to see what the future brings for her and her team 💙

Water Babies Mississauga is turning 3! 🥳🎂

Hear from Carol, Franchisee of Water Babies Mississauga, as she looks back on three years of memories, splashes, and milestones:

“One of the most special parts of this journey for me is seeing children in the pool who I taught myself when they were tiny babies. I was their first Water Babies teacher, and now I get to see them so much bigger, confident in the water and still swimming with us.

We’ve also seen families grow, welcoming second and third babies and coming back to us again. We’ve built lovely relationships with so many parents, and I think that sense of community is what I’m most proud of.

Being able to serve families in Mississauga and know that, in our own little way, we are contributing to their children’s development and giving them skills that can stay with them for life is incredibly rewarding.”

✨️ How we teach our swimmers to use their arms

Part 4: Front crawl arms 🏊🏻‍♀️

At this stage, your little one’s language skills, understanding and physicality have developed, allowing our teachers to refine their arm movements and introduce actual swimming terms as they learn 💬

The final progression is moving from reach and pull to bringing the arm out of the water and over the head, building towards the arm movement used in the stroke.

We use the teaching point “elbow up to the sky” ⛅️ to help them understand the motion. This encourages little ones to lift their elbow before reaching forward and pulling back underwater.

Over the course of this series, we’ve broken down how we teach your child to use their arms into four big progressions. But remember, there are lots of little steps in between, and every little one learns and progresses at their own pace 💙

Here’s why consistency is essential to your little one’s swimming journey 👇💦

🐠 Regular exposure to water helps boost confidence, build familiarity, aids learning, reduces fear and so much more. Coming to lessons week after week helps your child build on what they’ve learned. If classes are missed consistently your child may need more time to get comfortable in the water again before they can continue progressing.

💙 Little ones love familiarity! The more familiar they become with the lessons, their teacher and the routine, the more comfortable they feel and the easier learning becomes.

🔁 At Water Babies, repetition is one of the tools we use in our teaching. We practice skills regularly so our swimmers can build confidence and progress. Over time, what they’ve learned becomes second nature.

The more they swim, the more confident they become ✨

What’s the purpose of using “Name, are you ready? Go”? 🫧👇

It’s a word association we introduce from the very beginning of the Water Babies program and consistently use before underwater swims 💦

Here’s how it works:

💬 “Name” - you'll use your little one’s name to get their attention

👀 “Are you ready?” - we ask this as a question because it gives your child an opportunity to show us or tell us if they’re ready, or not. If they’re crying, sleeping, hiccupping or showing other signs they’re not ready, we’ll skip the underwater swim.

🐠 “Go” - we pause to give them time to prepare before going underwater.

Over time, our swimmers begin to recognize the words and know what to expect. As they develop, these familiar words help them prepare, from holding their breath as babies to learning to exhale underwater as they get older.

Water Babies Halifax is celebrating 3 years! 🎉🎂

Hear from Shawn, CEO, and Sarah, COO of Water Babies Canada, on what this milestone represents for them:

“We’re so happy and proud of our team and swimmers on the East Coast! 👏

Three years ago, our team at Head Office decided to open swimming lessons for babies and toddlers in Halifax, our first location outside of the Greater Toronto Area. We have gotten to meet so many amazing people along the way, including our original teacher Audrey, as well as Coraly and Sophia, and our current teachers Mackenna and Sadie.

Our success in Atlantic Canada is only the start, as we have now started to look for franchisees to take on and grow our legacy all across Canada, reaching new cities, towns, provinces and families along the way”

09/21/2026

How we teach our swimmers to use their arms 👀

Part 3: Reach and Pull 💦

Now that their coordination has developed and our little swimmers can move their arms more independently, we continue their arm progression from Tiger Arms to reach and pull 🫧

We’ll get everyone practicing their hand position with our “ice cream scoops” 🍧 or “sand scoops” keeping their fingers together.

Your little one will then learn to reach forward above the water and pull their arm back underwater towards their hip to work on the reach-and-pull motion. 👏

A common mistake parents make during swimming lessons ... 💦

Taking your little one out of the water as soon as they start crying.

We know it can be hard to see your child upset, but crying doesn’t always mean they’re unhappy in the water or feeling unsafe . They could be hungry, tired, overwhelmed by a new environment or unfamiliar experience or simply having a big-feelings moment.

Instead of leaving the pool, try staying in the water with them 🧡

Don’t force them to participate. Cuddle your little one and have them face their teacher and other swimmers so they can observe.

This gives them time to:

✨ Feel secure and become more familiar with their environment
👀 Watch their peers have fun and practice skills, which can encourage them to join in

When they’re ready, let them take the lead. Start with something simple, like playing with a toy, before gradually trying an activity again 🐠

Here’s how water confidence builds life confidence 🐠💙

💦 “I can do this” moments. Every new skill gives little ones a sense of accomplishment and helps them recognize what they’re capable of, building belief in themselves and their abilities.

🌱 Encouraging independence. The water provides an environment where your child can explore and move freely from a young age, supporting autonomy, independence, and self-confidence.

👥 Social development. Group lessons like Water Babies classes give our swimmers opportunities to interact with peers and other adults, building social confidence while developing skills like teamwork, sharing and taking turns.

💪 Building resilience. Learning and practicing skills teaches little ones to be patient and persevere when faced with something new or challenging.

These are skills that extend far beyond the pool, helping children grow into confident and capable little humans ✨

Teacher Course Completed 🎓

Over the past few days, our newest trainees have been working hard as they completed their residential teacher training course, combining in-pool training with online learning. Throughout the course, they’ve been building the knowledge and skills they need to become Water Babies teachers and support our little swimmers and their families.

In the next couple of weeks, they will head to pools across the network to complete their mentored lessons, gaining hands-on experience as they continue their journey to becoming Water Babies teachers.

A huge thank you to Arianna, Sarah, and Shawn for accompanying and guiding our trainees throughout the course and supporting them every step of the way.
