We practise Kobukan (prewar Aikido) influenced martial and dynamic Aikido while following “The Spirit of Aikido.” Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art that uses the energy of the attack and circles it back onto the aggressor. It does not rely on upper body muscle strength or body size to be effective. Training in Aikido helps you develop balance, flexibility, coordination, spatial awareness, strength, good judgement and self control. AIKIDO SHUGYO DOJO is a non-profit martial art club that has been a centre for Aikido training in Toronto’s east end since 1985. Our dojo teaches both open-handed and Aikido weapons techniques to adults and children. You are welcome to try a free class or come to watch All Levels and Children's classes!

Yumi Nakamura Sensei (1948–2024) was a wonderful gift to Canadian Aikido and a true bridge to Japan.

This year, the founder of Aikido Shugyo Dojo, Fran Turner Sensei, will be on the mat at Yumi Sensei’s memorial seminar.

Our new members have been learning about our (hybrid) Aikido lineage and dojo history—even all correctly answering "Who is the founder of Aikido Shugyo Dojo?" on their recent Kyu belt tests. However, many of you have not yet had the chance to meet Fran Sensei in person. This seminar is a precious opportunity to see her. Don't miss it!

Mastering Kokyu-ryoku Shinseikai style means neutralizing an attacker’s force the exact millisecond you connect.
Far from simple breath control, it functions closer to the internal principles of Aiki found in Aiki-jujutsu. Instead of fighting back, you blend with their momentum and redirect their expectations—making your physical presence seem to completely vanish. 🥷
Trust the process: We all start from 😮🤔😩🫤😠 before we finally reach that 「💡」 moment. It just takes time, patience, and continuous training!
