As the CEC Cougars gear up for their home opener tomorrow (Sunday, Sept 20th). Truro Pulse sat down and spoke with Cougars wide receiver, Daesean Brown, a 2027 graduate about his history and passion for the game.
TRURO PULSE: What got you into football in the first place?
DAESEAN: I have always watched football when I was younger, but what really got me hooked was Odell Beckham Jr’s one handed catch. I remember asking my mom to play football that same night.
TRURO PULSE: What position do you play, and what do you love most about it?
DAESEAN: I am a receiver, and I have been for along time. One thing I really love about playing this position is the chance of competing with other people. I love the feeling of running a “go” ball, where it’s just you, the defender & the ball. There’s almost no way to describe it.
TRURO PULSE: With this being your senior year, what’s one thing you’ll miss most about playing for your school?
DAESEAN: I think what I’m going to miss most is my coaches. They’ve helped me mature in so many ways, especially Bryson. Just going out to my coaches rooms, knocking, saying hi and joking around with them. They have all seen me go from being a big goofball to a kinda smaller goofball in a way. I’m definitely going to miss that & also playing with all my teammates. I’ve played with them all through my childhood and we have seen each-other grow up into our own people. I’m going to miss that most.
TRURO PULSE: Who has been the biggest influence on you as a player?
DAESEAN: I would definitely say it’s Bryson. He has helped me throughout my whole life and has taught me to not just be a better player but be a better person. He has taught me so many things that my mother couldn’t. A large amount of things I can do are definitely teachings from Bryson. I could never thank that man enough.
TRURO PULSE: Which teammate would last the longest in a zombie apocalypse? And who would be the first to go?
DAESEAN: Well, to be honest. I have full faith that Owen Fisher would definitely last the longest. He is very smart and can definitely run away from them. But, I know for a fact Ben Nicholson would perish first without a doubt. If you know, you know.
TRURO PULSE: Pre-Game meal: What are you eating?
DAESEAN: Rice and chicken, never failed me. They do say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, so I always eat that before a game.
TRURO PULSE: Complete this sentence: “Football wouldn’t have been the same without _________.”
DAESEAN: The first words that come to mind are “morning practice”. You can’t have football without a good 8am morning practice. That’s the beauty of it.
TRURO PULSE: Aside from football, can we catch you competing in any other sports for CEC?
DAESEAN: You will see me on the track running the 100m & probably the long & triple jump.
TRURO PULSE: Best piece of advice you ever received from a teammate or a coach?
DAESEAN: The best advice I have ever gotten was actually after my injury, from one of my football & track coaches, Troy Payson. He told me that my biggest weakness was myself. Mostly because I was holding back speed & strength, in fear of getting hurt again, but we overcame that mental block and now I feel very confident with my abilities.
Shout out P-dawg!
TRURO PULSE: Do you have any goals or personal bests you would like to achieve for Track this season?
DAESEAN: Absolutely, me & Coach Payson have talked about breaking 11 seconds in the 100m. In my opinion, I’m close. He says it’s going to take a lot of training but he thinks I can do it. Shout out, my Dawg.
TRURO PULSE: Forget being practical - if you could play for any professional team tomorrow, where are you going?
DAESEAN: The Detroit Lions. I would be happy with that.
TRURO PULSE: What has football taught you about handling failure or disappointment?
DAESEAN: Football teaches you that failure isn’t the end, its a part of teaching you to live as a person, and in the future I know that when failure happens its a chance to grow & not be upset.
TRURO PULSE: If you could freeze one moment from your high school football career and keep it forever, what moment would you choose?
DAESEAN: Definitely my touchdown against CPA. Not because it was my first one, but because it was everything I was studying beforehand. I watched film on the defence and I knew where the hole was gonna be. I knew where the defensive backs were going to look and I was actively watching them multiple plays before I scored that touchdown. Catching that touchdown is definitely the memory I would like to hold onto the longest. It just felt so rewarding.

“Daesean, I still remember your very first touchdown — I ran right alongside you, all the way to the end. If I could go back and relive every practice, every game, every drive & every moment, I would in a heartbeat.
Now, in your senior year, I realize just how precious all those moments were. And just like that first touchdown, I’ll always be there, running beside you all the way to the end.
I will forever be your #1 fan.
I love you, Daesean.
