Not every infertility or loss story ends with a baby. And those stories deserve to be told, too.

Some people keep trying.
Some pursue IVF.
Some experience pregnancy loss.
Some become parents through adoption or other paths.
Some reach a point where they have to imagine a life they never wanted to have to imagine.

And some live the rest of their lives grieving the family they hoped to have.

There is no single ending to infertility.

And a person's story doesn't become less worthy of compassion because it didn't end the way they hoped it would.

You do not have to become a parent for your pain to matter, your journey to matter, or your life to have meaning. đź’ś

"While trying to conceive (TTC), women and men grapple with some of life’s existential challenges. Personal identity often includes expectations for parenthood. When parenthood is delayed, compromised, or lost, a person must reconfigure their future. This process, and indeed the process of trying to mitigate infertility, is largely map-less. For many, the realization that conception isn’t going to happen automatically marks a first exposure to the body as less-than-expected, and when a couple engages with the medical community for help, it may represent their first experience with intensive medical intervention. Each aspect has its own challenges."

"In October, we see ghosts and goblins everywhere. We honour the dead. We also honour families who have had losses that we might otherwise not recognize."

Our local Cancer Support Centre is launching 2 support groups this month. These groups are free to participants and sponsored by Chalmers Foundation.

Here are the details, and registration information.

New Cancer Support Groups: Getting Candid About Cancer
We are very excited to share the addition of two "Getting Candid About Cancer" Support Groups; one for those with lived cancer experience and one for support persons.

Lived Cancer Experience Group: For individuals living with or beyond cancer, this group offers an opportunity to share experiences, explore challenges and successes, and connect with others who understand the realities of a cancer diagnosis. Tuesday, October 13 @ 4pm

Support Persons Group: For those supporting a loved one through cancer, this group provides a place to connect with others in similar roles, navigate the unique challenges of being a support person, and find support while tending to your own well-being. Tuesday, October 27 @ 4pm

Our facilitator is Kelly Green, who is a familiar and friendly face around the Care & Support Centre. Kelly supports the community as alicensed counselling therapist-candidate, empowerment group leader, and restorative yoga and mindfulness guide. Her commitment to this work was rooted in 2009 when she walked alongside her mother following a difficult diagnosis. Kelly welcomes you to bring all of the parts of yourself, just as you are. She holds a space that is compassionate and grounded, and infused with light-heartedness and hope.

We encourage anyone looking for support, understanding, and connection to consider joining one of these important and meaningful groups.

For those curious about mindful meditation, Mind Your Body - Alison Jardine, PT, is offering an introductory series starting next week.

👋 Hey! Wanted to pop on and let you all know about a 4-week series I’ll be offering that starts next Monday, 12:30-1PM, called “Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation.”
✏️ Fun fact! Over 14 years ago when I was in Physio school at DAL, I defended my research proposal “The Effects of an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program on Chronic Low Back Pain.” The concept of a mind-based tool helping a seemingly physical experience wasn’t clearly understood or accepted at that time. From my own experience with meditation and yoga, I knew personally of the mind-body benefits these practices could have. Fast forward to present day where Mindfulness is widely incorporated into many avenues. Thanks to progress in its research, we can now understand the physiological changes that happen in the brain and body, objectively, as well as the qualitative improvements people report experiencing in their life with consistent practice.
🤔Curious to learn more? This 4-week program will be offered in person, or live, through Zoom with recordings provided. Recordings only is also an option. Email: [email protected] to register or ask more questions!
🌲 P.S. As much as I’d love to be offering this near the water as shown, it will be held at my Studio on Main St. 🙂
