Big trade news for Canadian beekeepers:
The US recently slapped a steep 50% tariff on Canadian natural honey as part of an escalating broader trade dispute, essentially shutting down our biggest export market overnight.
Here is what is happening:
Exports have been drastically reduced or halted: With thin margins on bulk honey, a 50% tariff makes Canadian honey uncompetitive south of the border. US buyers immediately paused orders. Zero US producer push: American beekeepers didn't ask for this… US packers actually rely on Canada’s clean, high-grade white honey for blending.
Canadian counter-tariffs: Ottawa retaliated with a matching 50% duty on incoming US honey, but because we export far more than we import, the domestic sector still faces the squeeze.
While a lighter 2026 domestic harvest has cushioned the blow for now, long-term tariffs will put serious pressure on Canadian commercial apiaries. Now more than ever, make sure to check your labels and support your local Canadian beekeepers!
