Here’s the real reason couples who train together keep showing up, and it’s not romance.

Quitting requires privacy. You can talk yourself out of a workout in the car, alone, and nobody ever audits the excuse. But when your partner knows the schedule — when the excuse has to be said OUT LOUD to someone who’s already putting their shoes on — most excuses don’t survive.

One of our members ratted her husband out in the comments this week: “He said his ankle hurt. His ankle was FINE.” That’s not cruelty. That’s the system working.

And if you don’t have a spouse who’ll train — the mechanism is transferable. The 6am crew that texts “where were you.” The friend in the same time slot. The coach who notices. One of our longest-running members is here because her friend signed them both up after too much wine one night. 600+ classes later, best accident of her life.

Don’t build your fitness on privacy. Build it where people can see it.

To the person walking on the treadmill who thinks everyone’s judging: the strong people in the room respect you more than you know. We all had a day one. Yours is just visible right now.

Got a lot of replies to this email to my list today....

Hey Ya'll

Happy Tuesday.

Here’s a pattern from years of food logs: almost nobody has an eating problem at breakfast. The problem lives at 9:45pm, on the couch, snack in hand, not even hungry.

And yet every diet starts by redesigning breakfast. Why? Because morning-you is rested, motivated, and cooperative. 9:45-you has been making decisions for 15 straight hours and has nothing left. Diets keep getting written by morning-you and executed by night-you, and that’s why they keep failing.

Stop fighting night-you head-on. Engineer around them:

-Eat enough protein during the day so the 9:45 urge isn’t actual hunger wearing a costume.
-Add friction: if the crunchy thing lives at the store instead of the cupboard, most nights it doesn’t get eaten.
-Give the hands a job: tea, a walk around the block, or the most underrated fat loss tool ever invented — going to bed.
-If you’re going to snack anyway (valid), pre-decide what and how much in the afternoon, while smart-you is still on shift

You don’t need more discipline. You need fewer important decisions scheduled for your worst hour.

Try one of these tonight and reply tomorrow to tell me how it went. I love the replies!

Have a great day.

Matt

The GLP-1 conversation nobody’s having: appetite suppression makes protein HARDER to get, not easier. Small meals mean every meal has to be more intentional for protein.

Cheese whiz sandwiches are in my nutrition plan. Not because they’re healthy — because a plan with zero joy in it has a shelf life of about six weeks.

You look in the mirror every single day. That is exactly why you can't see the changes that ARE happening.

Take the photo.

You don't have to show it to anyone. You just have to be able to compare something other than a memory.

A hard class burns 300–500 calories.

Five classes a week is roughly 1500-2,000.

Dinner at the Bike Thief and dessert is well over 2000 calories.

That's not a reason to skip the gym. It's a reason to stop asking the gym to do nutrition's job for your goals.

Social media loves drama. It does not love “person builds consistent habits over a long period of time and slowly changes their life.”

Even though that second thing is the only thing that has ever actually worked.

Think about what the algorithm rewards: the 30-day shred, the villain hormone, the doctor being DESTROYED, the before-and-after with lighting tricks. Now think about what a real result looks like from the outside: a person parking in the same lot, three mornings a week, for two years. There’s no video in that. There’s just a completely different life at the end of it.

We’ve decided we’re okay being the boring ones. Boring is what we’re selling, honestly: a schedule, a program that progresses, coaches who know your name, and enough months strung together that you get the results you deserve.

The drama gets the views. The boring gets the results. Pick your feed accordingly.

Have a great day.

Two things happened at Evolve recently that belong in the same post.

A 91-year-old started group fitness classes at Evolve Dartmouth. And a woman in her 60s hit a deadlift PR which I heard about from the loudest cheering section in the building.

I keep telling you the science: muscle responds to training at every age, the JAMA study with the frail 90-year-olds gaining 174% strength in 8 weeks, all of it. But science doesn’t get people through the door. Proof does. And right now the proof is training at Evolve or a gym you love on a weekly schedule.

Here’s what both of them have in common, and it isn’t genetics or spare time. They started before they felt ready, at whatever level they were actually at. One is doing his first classes. One is pulling PRs after years of showing up. Same building, same principle, decades apart in their journey.

Whatever age you’re reading this at — you’re younger than someone who started this summer.

If someone in your life keeps saying “too old for that” — forward them this. Kindly.

Maybe don’t mention I called them out :)

Have a great day.
