“Congratulations to Maeda Sensei!!👏👏
My Japan instructor Toshiaki Maeda (8th Dan, former Japan national team coach, 1980 world champion, and my former homestay dad), received the Budo Distinguished Service Award from Prince Akishino at the Nippon Budokan’s January 2026 ceremony in Tokyo—an honor awarded annually to just one distinguished recipient from each of Japan’s ten member martial-arts organizations.
His dojo held a celebration for him in August, attended by many karate leaders including the Japan Karatedo Federation president.
High school student Sora Kikuchi is pictured with Sensei, and I taught him years ago in my kindergarten Tokyo karate class, and then he graduated up to Sensei’s dojo when he entered elementary school.
I look forward to celebrating with both of them on my next training visit to Japan.👊🏼👊🏼”
