Here’s the #1 mistake beginner runners make: starting too fast.
You feel great at the start line. The energy is high, everyone takes off, and so do you. Then 800 metres in, you’re gasping, your legs are done, and you’re wondering why running is so hard.
It’s not hard. You just started too fast.
The fix is called the talk test. Run at a pace where you can hold a full conversation. Slow enough to say a complete sentence without stopping for air. It’ll feel almost too easy at first.
That’s the pace that gets you to the finish line.
Ted’s Run has 2K, 5K, and 10K options this October 4, all beginner-friendly, all at Kildonan Park.

Registration for Ted’s Run 2026 is open!! We’d love to see you at the start line. 🧡
Every year, hundreds of Winnipeggers gather at Kildonan Park for one of the most meaningful mornings of the fall. Some are chasing a personal best. Some are running their very first 2K. All of them show up for the same reason — because literacy changes lives, and Ted believed that with everything he had.
This October 4, we run again. Three distances. One incredible community. A cause that matters right here in Manitoba.

Every race registration helps support Inspire | Hope | Lead | Mentor and Lit Works
Your participation does more than get you to the finish line. It helps provide students with the tools, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.
🏃A $20 donation can provide school supplies for a student for the year, reading and writing support for a day, or healthy snacks for an entire class for a week.
🏃A $50 donation can support a student’s literacy learning for a week, provide supplies for two students, or keep a classroom stocked with healthy snacks for a month.
🏃A $100 donation can fund a month of literacy support, provide supplies for five students, or add books and other learning resources to the classroom.
🏃A $500 donation can help support a student’s learning for six months, fund school supplies for 25 students, provide classroom technology support, enhance literacy programming, and make educational field trips possible.
🏃A $1,000 donation can support a student for an entire school year, help upgrade classroom technology, provide employability and computer literacy training, expand access to online learning tools, and support programs that benefit dozens of learners.
That’s the impact behind every registration.
That’s what your race fee helps make possible.

Meet Michael Michael Bennett 👋
He is TRL’s Race Director, and one of the people who makes sure race day actually happens.
Michael is a founding member of Ted’s Run for Literacy (the little race that could). Eighteen years ago he agreed to direct TRL for ONE year until a “real race director” could be found”. Here he is, almost two decades later, still pretending to be a race director! Michael’s induction into the MRA Hall of Fame in 2018 was a humbling experience for which he is eternally grateful. Michael reminds us that “it’s a good day to be alive”.
We couldn’t do this without Michael!. October 4 is going to be a great day, in part because of people like him.

Some of us run for clarity. Some run for the people we miss. Some run because the kid we used to be needed someone to keep going.
Why do you run? 👇
We’ll share favorites later this month — anonymous if you want.
