OBUOFIA AWKUNANAW — Enugu State has been thrown into fresh political turmoil following reports that live ammunition was fired at opposition party members during a political meeting at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuofia Awkunanaw.
Several people were reportedly wounded as armed attackers allegedly invaded the gathering and opened fire, forcing innocent participants to run for their lives.

The NDC members had reportedly planned to meet at Obuofia Primary School to deliberate on their electoral campaign. After learning that APC members had scheduled a meeting at the same venue and time, the NDC reportedly moved its meeting to Ihuani Awkunanaw specifically to avoid confrontation.
But even the change of venue allegedly failed to prevent vawulence.
According to accounts from the area, armed individuals subsequently invaded the new venue and fired live ammunition, allegedly wounding several people whose only apparent offence was attending a meeting organised by a rival political organisation.
FROM AKPUGO TO OBE TO OBUOFIA: HOW FAR WILL THIS GO?
The latest incident is being described by opposition voices as part of a disturbing pattern.
Similar allegations of political meeting disruptions and gunfire have previously emerged from Akpugo and Obe, where suspected political thugs were reportedly accused of invading opposition gatherings, firing shots and destroying chairs, canopies and other property.
If these reports are confirmed, Enugu cannot afford to treat them as ordinary political disagreements.

For years, Enugu politics was associated with political contest, negotiation and electoral competition. The reported use of fi****ms to disrupt opposition meetings represents a frightening departure from that tradition.
Nobody should be shot because they belong to another political party.
Nobody should be hunted because they attend a campaign meeting.
Nobody should be forced to choose between exercising their democratic rights and staying alive.
THE QUESTION IS SIMPLE: WHO BENEFITS FROM THE POLITICS OF FEAR?
The people of Enugu deserve answers.
The security agencies must investigate the reported shooting, identify the perpetrators, establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the full force of the law.
Not tomorrow. Not after the election. NOW.
Those who allegedly supplied the weapons, organised the attackers or facilitated the violence must also be investigated wherever credible evidence exists.

A government that claims legitimacy must protect every citizen, including its political opponents.
A political party that believes in democracy must be able to compete without intimidation.
