🇩🇪 German Players in Grand Slam History: Zverev Joins Becker and Stich

Alexander Zverev’s first Grand Slam title marks a major milestone for German men’s tennis, as he became the first German male Grand Slam champion since Boris Becker in 1996.

For years, Zverev had been one of the strongest players of the Open Era without a major title. Now, he finally joins the very short list of German Grand Slam champions.

The dominant figure, by a clear margin, remains Boris Becker. With six Grand Slam titles, Becker is still the great reference point for German men’s tennis in the Open Era: a player who did not just win majors, but became one of the defining names of his generation. His legacy keeps him well ahead of every other German player in this historical ranking.

Before Zverev’s breakthrough, only Michael Stich had also managed to win a Grand Slam singles title for Germany. Stich’s Wimbledon triumph in 1991 gave German tennis a second major champion in the Open Era, but the list remained extremely selective for more than three decades.
The table also highlights another important dimension: consistency and longevity. Philipp Kohlschreiber, with 68 Grand Slam appearances in 382 tournaments, and Tommy Haas, with 60 in 348 tourneys, stand out not for major titles, but for their long-term presence at the highest level. They represent the depth of German tennis beyond the champions: regular competitors, durable careers, and repeated appearances on the biggest stages.

In that sense, Zverev’s title changes the picture. Germany now has three male Grand Slam champions in the Open Era — Becker, Stich and Zverev — while the broader table shows how difficult it has been for even very strong German players to cross the final line at major level.

Fils, nacido el 12-6-2004, irrumpió con fuerza en 2023 hasta el puesto 934 de la historia, para saltar 360 puestos hasta el nº 574 al final de 2024, 102 puestos más en 2025, y, a estas alturas de 2026, ya asciende otros 83 puestos más hasta el puesto 389.

Además, Jannik lidera la carrera anual de 2026, similar al ATP Race to Turin, con una pequeña ventaja de 3.900 a 3.600, en una temporada que se presenta muy reñida.

En el Ranking TRH, el italiano sube hasta el nº 37, mientras que Carlos Alcaraz también gana una posición y se coloca nº 39.

Jannik Sinner has moved ahead of Carlos Alcaraz after the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, regaining No. 1 in the current ranking and widening his lead in the TRH Historical Ranking.

Sinner is back on top of the ATP ranking and has also moved ahead of Alcaraz (No. 2) in our TRH, the Tennis Race for History.

Jannik also leads the 2026 yearly race, similar to the ATP Race to Turin, by a narrow 3,900 to 3,600 margin, in what is shaping up to be a very tight season.

In the TRH Ranking, the Italian rises to No. 37, while Carlos Alcaraz also moves up one place to No. 39.

If we compare the careers of both players, these are the numbers as of today:

🇪🇸🎾 ¡Comienza la temporada europea de tierra batida!

Con el regreso de Jannik Sinner al torneo del Principado de Mónaco y la oportunidad Alcaraz de repetir título, 2026 se presenta muy interesante. El italiano buscará su primer título y recortar distancias con el español en el ranking ATP.

Repasemos la historia: En Montecarlo el dominio de Nadal es apabullante. En este y en todos los torneos en arcilla el español no tiene rival, por eso ninguno de sus seguidores se acerca lo más mínimo. Sus marcas son imbatibles.

Tras la retirada de Rafael Nadal (11 títulos en 12 finales), sólo 5 jugadores en activo han logrado el trofeo (Tsitsipas 3, Djokovic 2, Alcaraz 1, Wawrinka 1, y Rublev 1).

Tsitsipas cae en primera ronda y pierde la ocasión de aspirar a su cuarto título y desempatar con los históricos Thomas Muster, Bjorn Borg e Ilie Nastase, con 3 cada uno, aunque en aquella época no serían equivalentes a los Masters 1000 de hoy.
