On behalf of the government and the people of Fiji, I want to say how proud we are of the Vodafone Fijiana XV for their incredible win against Japan, with a score of 15-12. Seeing your dedication, skill, and teamwork come together to kick off your campaign in Fukuoka with such a fantastic victory truly fills our hearts with pride. You’ve shown everyone what Fiji is capable of.

I also want to congratulate the Basketball Fiji Team for making history in securing a spot in the FIBA Asia Cup 2029 Pre-Qualifiers Second Round after beating Vietnam 69-57 in Ulaanbaatar is no small feat. Your hard work and determination have inspired us all.

Congratulations to both teams, the Fijiana XV and the Basketball Team Fiji. You’ve made our small island nation proud on the international stage. You’ve proven that no matter our size, Fiji can stand tall and shine brightly as good ambassadors both on and off the field.

I also want to thank your coaches, managers, and officials for all the effort you put into getting these talented athletes ready physically, mentally, tactically, and I believe, spiritually too. And let’s not forget the families and sponsors who support and sacrifice so much behind the scenes. Your collective effort makes these achievements possible.

As the Fiji Women’s Handball Team prepares to compete in the Oceania Championship in Wellington, New Zealand, I want to wish you all the best. We are behind you, praying for you, and cheering you on every step of the way. Keep making Fiji proud; you’ve got this.

Fiji is a small island, but we’re big in spirit. We face challenges head-on and turn them into opportunities. We don’t shy away from responsibility; we embrace it. And we do our best as a team, knowing we’re stronger together.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Your efforts are for yourselves, your families, and your country. And even though Fiji is small in land size, on the world stage, we punch way above our weight. Whether in sports, entertainment, or politics, Fiji’s achievements shine bright.

Congratulations to our Fiji Women’s Handball Team as they prepare to represent our country at the IHF Nations Trophy Oceania in Wellington, New Zealand.

To our players, this is an opportunity you have worked hard for and you should be proud of how far you have come. As you take the court, believe in yourselves, play for each other and give it everything you have. Wear the Fiji jersey with pride and enjoy every moment of representing your country.

Oceania's first Senior Women's Handball Championship throws off in Wellington Australia and Fiji will throw off the first-ever Oceanian Senior Women's Handball Championship at Wellington's Ākau Tangi Sports Centre on Thursday.

Members of the Fiji Youth team who made it to this Senior Women’s tour to the first IHF Nations Cup.

Our first Senior Women team presented their i-tatau to the Honourable Minister of Sport Jesé Saukuru at their office.

The Honourable Minister explained to the team that the i-tatau is customarily based on when Fijian men who had to go out for war, the village would prepare a feast to farewell the warriors. It was a significant moment as no one knew whether they would return.

So as the team presented their i-tatau, they were reminded that similarly departing our shores as national sport athlete representatives was like going out for war. If it meant competing and potentially laying down one’s life for your nation, then so be it. It was for the nation of Fiji.

The team were greatly challenged!

This was followed by classy entertainment by the youth band, who are also preparing for their national representation to the World Youth expo in Serbia! And healthy refreshment before we were farewelled.

Thank you to the Government of Fiji for the “war” challenge and treating our women handball athletes to a classic farewell.
