Balancing a good time with competing doesn’t have to suck āŒ

I thought I’d make light of this photo that I found whilst the football was on back when🤣

Look many of you may know I do love my drink, I have for many years and I pretty much like every drink there is, I have many photos of absolute carnage from heavy nights BUT it can be balanced

I don’t advocate anyone to drink nor my athletes but I do think as humans socialising and being generally happy makes more of a difference to a lifters attitude and performance.

Here’s my rules around drinking

•if your in prep don’t drink max two if your with friends. None on the week of competing

• only drink at social settings, catching up with friends that sort of thing, don’t buy drinks to have at home.

•if none of those apply and your in an off season and wanna go wild sure, just don’t expect your performance tomorrow to be great.

Final note:

Although alcohol is detrimental to performance I think too many people blame a bad night out to be lazy and half ass training. I pulled my first 220kg in Covid 8 beers deep and I’ve trained legs hanging out my arse.

The lifters attitude surpasses all obstacles.

ACCESSORY SKIPPERS HEAR THEE šŸ‘‚šŸ»šŸ«µšŸ»

before I get into this, no in a hypothetical situation where you could pick one yes accessory movements wouldn’t ā€œbeatā€ specificity.

However the world isn’t like that so who cares.
Here’s my argument:

If all I gave you on a program was squats, deadlifts and pause bench. You would plateau very quickly. We could change rep schemes and periodise it but eventually the tank runs dry. 🪫

But that’s why accessories are amazing, we can turn bench press for example into a dozen other variables. We can change the speed, the pauses, the technique the leverage. This allows adaptation to keep happening behind the scenes in the body.

Move to smaller movements, single joint movements. We use these to start piling up extra workload into the muscles we wish to target which does a few things

•allows us to add more volume without wrecking our CNS

•Helps target weaker muscles to assist in the main lifts

•helps build extra muscle more effectively in a targeted way

Let’s also not forget tracking them is the most important part. If your Tricep extensions are super weak. And you were to go from half a stack for 12 to the full stack, I’d wager that would have a very positive effect on the bench press, same goes for ALL lifts. People who RDL 200kg for reps are going to have a sick deadlift… why ? Because their accessory movements help build it.

If 80% of your workout is accessory movements why would you cheap out on them ?

RPE, if I have to pick one it’s an overshoot… šŸš€

I’m not saying maxing out is an acceptable form of overshooting but on your rep work day to day. If the goal is to hit an RPE then we want to hit that sure.

However sometimes when we ramp up to find that RPE at that top set we go from thinking the last set was a 7 maybe even a 6 so you put on more weight to hit an RPE 8 but then we end up at a 9… that’s fine.

At least I know that it’s our current ceiling, you actually put some f**** effort in to the session and you are determined to perform your best.

If we take another scenario of someone who is too afraid to go past RPE or even risk it. Then they are never truly working to what I’ve set out for them and they’re leaving progress on the table.

It may seem like a smart choice but it could be what’s stopping your progress. Trying a little harder in your sessions won’t kill you or destroy your progress. If your coach wants you to hit an RPE go for it. But if that situation comes along I’d much rather know you tried than you stayed comfortable.

his progress this year has been brilliant. šŸ”„

Here’s how we got him there

1.) Touch and go bench

Now a lot of people don’t like using it because it’s not competition specific however because missing commands and lack of technique is not an issue I’m not worried.

This has allowed him to overload the body beyond normal pause bench. It’s also taught him how to explode off the chest and move with speed, which is something he has struggled with for a while.

2.) Forcing progress

Many programs just wait for you to land on a PR like it falls into your lap but if you want progress it needs to be earned.

Giving him the options to push when appropriate has allowed him to make those leaps when he can. For example if I program triples but the RPE is 7 and the target is 9 he NEEDS to up the weight. Don’t just follow a script. If there is opportunity it needs to be taken in the right parameters.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER ?

I’ll explain each one and their place

•Maximal StrengthšŸ†
This goes without explanation this is what we compete for this is how we test and how we demonstrate our ability. Though it doesn’t inherently build anything. It is still the main reason we’re here

•Strength SpeedšŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸƒšŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø
Believe it or not most people call this power, that isn’t the case, the reason we have this is to develop speed (relatively) at a high weight. A heavy stimulus that builds maximal strength but a certain speed is maintained to prevent grinding and keep lifts running smoothly under pressure.

•Strength EndurancešŸ’ŖšŸ»
This is where we demonstrate strength, build stronger muscles and learn how to take on more volume and fatigue to help us in our peaks and help the body adapt to more and more work. A great opportunity for muscle building and practice.

•PoweršŸ’„
The 1rm% is variable here as it’s dependant on the lifters ability to perform a lift where maximal speed and max weight meet. Too heavy, speed slows down. Too light well you’re not working hard enough. This develops motor unit recruitment and teaches the body to fire on all cylinders. Low reps high sets maintains technique but allows to get enough work in.

•Speed/ velocityšŸƒšŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø
Exactly what’s on the tin, teaches lifters to move fast and as fast as possible.

•Muscular endurance šŸ”„
This isn’t on the velocity curve because this is solely for the purpose of adding volume like accessories to build more muscle. Now this isn’t the ā€œmuscle building rangeā€ just a generic way to add more volume to build muscle.

This month I can honestly say has been a f***** pissathon.

I am Alive, normal posts to resume once I’m not severely hungover or injured from chasing the sheep while pi**ed at the wedding
