3½ years ago, Miss Laura was hit at 50mph by a police car that ran a red light 😔 She was trapped inside her car and had to be cut out by the fire brigade.
Paramedics told her she was lucky to be alive – and that being a dancer had helped protect her. Unfortunately, she suffered a blow to the head, resulting in a brain injury and subsequently post-concussion syndrome ❤️🩹
It’s been a long and arduous road to recovery – navigating the challenges of a brain injury whilst trying to get back to dancing, often feeling like two steps forward and ten back.
Last year, she made the difficult decision to step back from holiday events and activities to reduce her workload, cognitive overwhelm and fatigue, and give her body and brain more space to heal.
“My priority since the accident has been being ‘Miss Laura’ – trying to get back to consistently being in class with you all each week. My creative projects as a dancer and choreographer have had to go on hold, while I’ve focused on being well enough to show up for the beautiful children and young people I get to share dance with.
I really cannot thank my dance family, past and present, enough for the love, support and compassion they’ve shown me. My whole life has had to change since the accident, and even now I have to prioritise rest between classes in order to continue doing what I love.
The psychological, emotional and physical impact is still a daily hurdle. As time went on, physical injuries from the accident became more apparent, but with physical therapies to regain stability and strength, alongside EMDR therapy for PTSD, I’m hopeful I’m through the worst of it now.
It’s been a long and frustrating 3½ years, but I’m feeling positive about the future and hopeful that I’ll continue to progress and feel more like ‘myself’ again.
Thank you for the space, patience and kindness you’ve given me while I’ve been healing from this traumatic experience.
Being Miss Laura is an honour – and one I’m incredibly grateful to continue.” ❤️
