Bedwas RFC XV Team

As the team head to Narbeth this weekend, skipper Dale Rogers will play his 100th game for Bedwas RFC XV Team.

Well done and what a fantastic achievement 👏

After a Saturday off for the Wales v New Zealand fixture last week the show goes on as Bedwas head to our local rivals and friends at Cross Keys on Saturday, kick-off 2-30pm.

Ben Drew returns from injury and replaces Ryan Thomas (injury) at loose-head prop, with Jo Hole coming in at second row.

Behind the scrum Lloyd Wilkins makes way for James Hallett at fly half with Sam Davies returning at outside centre.

Iwan Burgwin starts at full back with no further changes to the starting line up from last time out.

A couple of highs and lows on the road the last few weeks for our Championship side, but we’ll be looking to put in a big performance at home when we welcome Ystalyfera this Saturday…

𝙈𝙖𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙜 gained revenge for the Cup defeat by 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 the previous week, physically overpowering them this week to claim a deserved win.

This week’s game was played in much calmer conditions punctuated by heavy rain showers contributing to a greasy pitch not conducive to running rugby.

Lloyd Wilkins had the first opportunity to 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 on the scoreboard, but his penalty attempt went just wide. 𝙈𝙖𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙜's Owen Howe had a similar opportunity 8 minutes later, but his shot similarly fell wide.

𝙈𝙖𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙜 were dominant in the scrum throughout and it was from a scrum penalty they took the lead after 32 minutes, Owen Howe gratefully taking the three points.

A second penalty from a scum after 38 minutes was again kicked successfully by Howe to see his side six points ahead at the break.

The second half started much the same. Howe kicked another penalty from just inside the 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 half following another 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 scrum offence.

𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 attempts to get on the scoreboard continued to slip away, a combination of mistakes and good defence saw scoring opportunities at a premium.

Lloyd Wilkins reduced the arrears with a penalty after 55 minutes which gave 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 a bonus point for a losing margin of less than 7 points. 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 brought on fresh legs, but 𝙈𝙖𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙜 held firm for the remainder of the game.

𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 frustrations grew and a yellow card for Harry Oliver for a late challenge on Howe with time almost elapsed capped a miserable afternoon for Stefan Sankala’s men.

Next 𝕊𝕒𝕥𝕦𝕣𝕕𝕒𝕪 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 host 𝑌𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑦𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑎 𝑅𝐹𝐶, kick-off 2-30pm for a league fixture and a chance to put right the wrongs of this week’s disappointment.

After School bear right into Mill Road (be careful take right hand fork which is downhill)
Continue along road – pass Maesteg Celtic on left – until you pass disused school on right hand side.
Turn right at next lights into Crown Road follow main road to new School on right hand side at top of hill. Parking is available in the School grounds. If there isn’t any room in the school it is fine to park on the road despite double yellow lines – it is a short walk to South Parade playing fields.

𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 produced their best team performance of the season to date to run in seven tries against a 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛 𝙈𝙀𝙏 side who fought well until the final whistle on a sunny, mild October afternoon.

After the usual settling in period 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 opened the scoring after ten minutes. Met conceded a penalty which was kicked to touch. Fron the resulting line up the 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 forwards drove ho**er Mike Dacey over the line. Lloyd Wilkins’ conversion drifted across the posts.

Three minutes later Wilkins’ penalty kick attempt hit a post and rebounded to safety, but Lloyd Lewis showed electrifying post shortly afterwards to cross in the right-hand corner; once again Wilkins’ kick hit a post and was cleared.

With half of the forty minutes gone 𝙈𝙀𝙏's outside half Osian Evans missed with a 40-metre penalty shot but made amends 6 minutes later as he found the target to get his side on the scoreboard.

𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 increased their lead after 35 minutes via former 𝙈𝙀𝙏 scrum half Callaghan Smith who burst through a couple of would-be tacklers to ground over the line, Wilkins’ conversion kick was off target.

Evans kicked a penalty goal deep into stoppage time to reduce the arrears to nine points with the last kick before the referee blew for half time.

Tom Workman entered the fray as the start of the second half as her replaced Ben Drew. Four minutes into the half Workman used his considerable size to crash through the covering defence to increase the 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 lead, earning a bonus point for four tries at the same time, Wilkins added the extras.

𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 tails were up, and Aaron Billingham increased the lead after an exciting run weaving past defenders to dot down, Wilkins again added the two points.

Mike Dacey made it three tries in eleven minutes as he was driven over for an unconverted try.

𝙈𝙀𝙏 responded with a try by replacement Brad Morgan after 54 minutes, Evans added the conversion, but 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 stormed back three minutes later and quick hands across the line put Lloyd Lewis in for his second try of the afternoon in the corner. Wilkins added the extras.

A second try of the afternoon by Brad Morgan reduced arrears after 64 minutes but the try went unconverted.

𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙨 flanker Rhys Lewis was sinbinned for bringing down a 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛 maul and from the resulting penalty 𝙈𝙀𝙏's ho**er Connor Chapman took advantage of their extra man to force his way over for a try. Osian Evans missed the conversion.

Two Lloyd Wilkins penalties after 72 and 75 minutes were enough to quell any hopes of a student comeback and seal the deal for a deserved home win.

𝗕𝗲𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘀 welcome Cᴀʀᴅɪғғ MET RFC to the 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 on Saturday for a ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕞𝕡𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕙𝕚𝕡 fixture, kick-off 2-30pm.

𝗕𝗲𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘀 head coach 𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑓𝑎𝑛 𝑆𝑎𝑛𝑘𝑎𝑙𝑎 has drafted 4️⃣ players in on permit to cover for injuries. Tom Workman and Geraint O’Driscoll continue their spells on permit from 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗙𝗖 and are joined by colleague Lloyd Lewis.

We also welcome Number 8️⃣ Ben Moa from the 𝔻𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕠𝕟𝕤 𝔸𝕔𝕒𝕕𝕖𝕞𝕪.
