You will never win an argument with an idiot.
You are the idiot in this example😬

For most people, it is far easier to be 100% in the game. Completely locked in with no exceptions. Rather than trying to balance lots of things at once.

Most people would refer to this as an all or nothing mentality. So where does you being an idiot come into this?

The reason a lot of people are like this is due to the fact you don’t give yourself the opportunity to negotiate with the idiot (You).

It seems pretty reasonable at first to try and have a balance with anything you are doing. Rules and treats that will make your life more enjoyable, while still working towards your goals.
Unfortunately this is usually the start of the end for most people. That voice in your head that is making these exceptions for you is often not on your team. And as soon as you give it any sort of leverage in the matter you are going to lose the argument to the idiot.

It may sound nice, the idea of balance in your life. But most people cannot handle the freedom of decision making. So when people preach being locked in. It’s not about being hardcore. It’s about being efficient. And most of the time, trying as hard as you can is the only option you have.

A topic that came up between me and several clients last week was EGO lifting or not letting your ego get in the way of your targets.

The one everyone understands is trying to lift heavy weights that you definitely aren’t capable of lifting.

But your ego can show up in loads of different ways…
-Lack of stability in the movement
-Use of extra muscles and momentum
-Unable to control tempo
-Inability to step back when injured
-Unwilling to change something.

Now most of these will probably show up via ignorance. The old “I don’t need to” or “Whats the point in that” type of argument you will have with yourself. But sometimes it can come from a lack of experience and practice. These things are all skills in themselves, and if you don’t practice any of them, then you will never be able to control them.

I always say “Make heavy weights look light” the idea is that if I didn’t see the weight you were lifting I couldn’t tell what weight it was. When it looks nice and tidy whatever weight is, I would say you are now ready to start pushing heavier weights.
Because ultimately that is the goal with resistance training but that shouldn’t come at the expense of the nice clean reps.

Strip your work back and get it looking nice. This stops injury and should lead to more improvement long term than if you let your ego stand in the way.

End of an 8 week tidy up for Greg. Just shy of a stone shifted.

Stick to the plan and work hard is the aim of the game. Greg smashed it. Time for some relaxing and partying before we get stuck back in to a building phase 🤛

You get to choose your suffering.

The first photo is me when I was out of shape.
The second is me at the end of a bodybuilding prep. Exhausted, depleted and with a face that barely looked like mine.

Both came with their own form of suffering.

You can suffer from staying comfortable, avoiding the gym, eating whatever you want and never pushing yourself. Drowning in the mind of someone who isn’t happy with how they look.

Or you can suffer through the early mornings, the hard sessions, the cardio, the discipline and the days when you really don’t feel like doing it.

You’re going to suffer either way.

So choose the suffering that moves you forward.

Pick the pain that pays you back.

Being in shape long term really isn’t that difficult❌

Now don’t get me wrong. Getting in shape to begin with can be pretty strenuous for a lot of people. But once you get there, there is really no reason to be out of shape again.

Think of it as riding a bike… Once you learn you never forget. Once you have learned to skills and how to execute your plans, it would take a complete crisis to end up going back the way. You dont need to count calories, you dont need to be smashing the gym and doing your steps to the T. You just need to do enough to not go backwards. Which, truth be told, is a lot less than people realise.

The knowledge you gain from getting in shape allows you to live in both realities. But for some reason a lot of people go from one to another. An endless loop of gym goer to couch potato. Keep a toe or two in the game and you will never have to “Get in shape” ever again.

Sometimes we don’t train for anything…

Now I am a big preacher of having something in the books to hold yourself accountable for. It does tend to make you work harder knowing you have to perform or be ready for a certain day.

But I also think you can get lost in this mindset.

Your training should be fun (to you). A way to blow off steam. A way of making the rest of your life more enjoyable.

For the most part, I train because I enjoy training. Some days you just go through the motions. Some days its about catching up with friends. Some days its just about getting out the house.

A great personal example for me. I diet (for the most part) to give myself that room to indulge in things that most people have a bad view of. Cakes, sweet treats, large quantities of food.

My training is fun and it also allows me to have fun outside of the gym without feeling guilty. This is probably more relevant to 99% of you than it would be me saying you need to train for a competition.

Make your goals relevant to you. Whatever they are🤛
