Lovely day had guiding on Blackwater river. We completed 8KM starting and finishing at the Moy and calling into the lovely Argory National Trust for a visit.

22 years since I last ran the Belfast City Marathon… and here we go again.

Training has reminded me that showing up matters. Early mornings, late evenings, wet weather and tired legs… but slowly building fitness week by week.

So far:
🏃‍♂️ 14 weeks of training
🏃‍♂️ 340+ miles completed

I’m running to raise funds for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland, who provide vital support to individuals and families across Northern Ireland.

If you would like to support, any donation is greatly appreciated 🙏

Week 1 of training towards the Belfast City Marathon on 3rd May is complete, and I’m quietly pleased with how it went.Nothing dramatic or heroic just getting out the door and doing the work, often in proper January conditions. I covered just over 20 miles across the week, spread sensibly around work, family, and life in general. A mix of road and trail runs helped keep things interesting and stopped me running the same loop repeatedly while questioning my decisions.A few lessons stood out early on. Pacing mattered more than anything keeping things genuinely easy meant finishing runs feeling controlled rather than broken. I also chose to run without music, which was tougher than expected but surprisingly helpful. It forced me to focus on breathing, technique, and staying relaxed rather than distracted. There was discomfort at times, cold legs, heavy feet but instead of fighting it, I tried to accept it and remind myself that this is part of conditioning both body and mind.New trainers and socks were also introduced this week, which already feels like an excellent life decision.Rest days were built in and felt just as important as the running. Recovery feels like an investment, not a luxury. On to week 2.

Day 1.

This year, as I turn 50, I’ve set myself one clear goal to run the Belfast City Marathon on 3 May.

Full honesty: I’m not a regular marathon runner. The last time I ran Belfast Marathon was 2004, so this is very much a restart rather than a comeback.

I’ll be sharing weekly updates because the real challenge isn’t speed, it’s consistency. Fitting runs around work and family, staying injury-free, and getting out the door in the dark, damp winter mornings or late at night usually questioning my life choices until about mile one.

I’m taking this on to raise money for Cancer Focus NI, to prioritise long-term health, and to prove it’s never too late to start again. January confidence may also be playing a part.

The training plan is deliberately simple and realistic: a few runs each week, one longer run at the weekend, mostly easy pace, building gradually and showing up even when the weather and motivation aren’t ideal.

I’m sharing the journey in the hope it encourages someone else to take their next step, whatever that looks like.
