Why does your back hurt when you train?

Most of the time it’s not damage. It’s not your spine wearing out. It’s a lack of control somewhere and usually that’s the core not doing its job, so something else compensates.

I know how easy it is to hear “back pain” and assume the worst. I did too.

After years of gymnastics, my back had been over-arching and compensating for so long that it just gave out. I was in pain constantly and it wasn’t just physical. It knocked my confidence, it changed how I moved through everyday life and it made me scared of my own body.

The instinct is to rest completely or push through and hope it sorts itself out. Neither worked for me.

What actually changed things was going right back to basics. Unglamorous, controlled, boring looking work before anything heavy. Learning to brace properly. Learning to move without compensating. Rebuilding trust in my own body one rep at a time.

That’s the process I still use with clients who come to me with the same story. Not rest. Not pushing through. Control first.

If your back tends to ni**le when you train, comment RESET and I’ll send you the 5 moves I started with.

Unpopular opinion: if you’re not doing functional movements, the stuff that mirrors real life like squatting, carrying, getting up off the floor, you’re missing out on a lot.

Machines have their place, but functional movements, squats, deadlifts, carries, presses, are what actually translate into real life. Getting stronger there means picking up your kids easier, carrying shopping without struggling, moving through your day with more ease.

Training should make your life better outside the gym too, not just change how you look in it.

Follow if you want training that fits into your life, not one that takes over it.

Two years ago she came to me already doing Pilates, but she knew her body needed strength training to hold up long-term.

Her goal was never to get skinny. It was to move well, stay independent and feel strong enough to live her life fully, now and later.

Two years on she eats breakfast every morning.
She tracks her protein without thinking about it.
She can stand up off the floor with no hands.
She lifts weights every week without worry.
She’s hit flexibility goals she never thought were possible.
She’s down 13kg along the way.

But the actual biggest win is that she stuck with it. Through busy weeks, low motivation days and everything life threw at her.

This week she sent me this:
“Thank you for two amazing years. I am so grateful for your constant encouragement, enthusiasm and for making training fun. This is the most consistent I have ever been and it’s because it really feels like it works for me.”

That’s the whole job. Not quick fixes. Programmes that fit your actual life so you never have to start over again.

DM me REALIGN if you want training that works with your life instead of against it.
