Celebration of 40 years of the Ashford 10K: A tradition that we’ve grown up with, by Jacqueline Snare. ⬇️
Jennie Mathews and I, Jacqi Snare, joined Ashford Athletic Club when we were just 11 years old. We trained on the grass track at The North School — no lighting, no frills — and paid just 2p per session. Little did we know then how deeply the club would shape our lives and result in a lifelong friendship. We just liked to run fast!
Our parents soon became involved too, first as officials and later as coaches, team managers and committee members. Both families eventually went on to serve as AAC Presidents. Together, we played a part in the Julie Rose Memorial Fund, working with Ashford Borough Council to secure funding for what would become the Julie Rose Stadium — named in memory of Julie Rose, whom Jennie and I had the privilege of training alongside.
Our athletic careers took us from county selection to South East representation, with Jennie progressing to international level and competing for both Great Britain and England. We shared countless memories along the way, including taking part in the very first 10K race in 1986, which started and finished at the Stour Centre.
On that occasion, we both ran dressed as bumblebees — a moment that still makes us laugh 40 years later! (Here is a photo of us running and the medals.)
Today, Jennie and I remain dedicated members of Ashford Athletic Club, continuing to coach, support, and champion the 10K event that has become such an important part of the local community. This year’s race marks its 40th anniversary, making it especially meaningful as our children and grandchildren will be taking part — continuing a family tradition and our lifelong connection with AAC.
Race Day Roles:
On race day, I will once again be organising the children’s fun run — something I’ve proudly done for the past 30 years. Held before the 10K, it gives young runners the chance to experience the excitement and atmosphere of race day.
Jennie will also be there on race day. When the race was based at the Stour Leisure Centre she provided the essential administration to ensure the event ran smoothly and safely. These days this is provided by the team from Sporting Events UK, who organise the event in partnership with AAC. With more than 1,200 runners expected to take part on Sunday, Jennie will be busy handing out medals and water and helping me with the fun funs, along with many others from Ashford AC, who will be marshalling on the day.
