Well done to Tom Carter who took 4 year old “Peanut” out to do his first show today.

They came home with two wins in the novice 🥇Even managing to break that elusive 70% barrier …. Not bad for a maiden voyage 😉

Kathryn Virjee and Alex Harrison-West have owned him (Peanut not Tom) since a foal and can’t wait to see what the future brings next.

National Championships 2026

For us the whole show felt very exciting. Not because there was a crepé van, the faint whiff of prize money or a grandstand (Alex loves a crowd) 😜 but because our horses convincingly rose to the occasion!

Venti was a total pro from the get go. Due to her overachieving complex, directly qualifying practically every time her hoof hits the sand, she hasn't had many runs out to get comfortable at the level. Having said this she has the best brain and we knew she wouldn't let us down. She pulled out two solid 68% tests in the PSG and Inter 1, a few small wobbles yet such quality and willingness to fight for her rider. Give her a bit more time to strengthen up and she is going to be pretty hard to knock from the top spot in the BigTour in the years to come.
Big thank you to owners Asya and Mike for trusting us with her training and brining the super fan energy!

Tom took Future to contest the four year old young horse class to finish over 72%. They produced exactly the round we hoped they would. Easy. Confident. Harmonious.
With the young horses we believe it is all about making good "firsts." It was a testament to Future's character and the every day handling by the home team that every new question, from strange new stable, hand walking past flapping flags and an arena walk with with 20+ other horses was a complete non-event. When a young horse can come away from a championship and tell all his friends in the field what a fun weekend he had we consider that a job done right!

Jonny's love of riding outside proved rather advantageous as they battled through biblical rain throughout their warm up and test .... Alex felt very smug having warmed up in sunshine 😅
It was quite an ask of GZ to come to the nationals during his first season as a GrandPrix horse, combined with it being the first time without a whip (those who have ridden the GrandPrix know how difficult loosing your "whip virginity" is.)
They produced some super elegant trot work, extensions and pirouettes whilst Jonny showed great horsemanship building more and more confidence throughout the piaffe and passage as the test progressed.

Kickback - what a horse!
To be honest there isn't really much else to say other than he smashed it. A few small wobbles in the GrandPrix held them 5th overnight but he and Alex came out for the freestyle with a steely determination, with an intensity Alex normally only shows when tackling the "20 nugget challenge" from McDonald's.
Despite changing the floorpan about three hours before they ventured down the centre line they finished on just under 73% to claim 4th in the overall GrandPrix championships! - Best of the non-olympians 😉

Now back home and getting ready for probably the most exciting news ..... Alex has rented a DIGGER ..... holes to follow.

Some of you will already know Emma from around the yard. You’ll have probably seen her looking after the horses, getting stuck into the day-to-day jobs or generally keeping everything moving behind the scenes. But there’s probably a lot you don’t know about how Emma actually ended up here.

Emma talks us through her journey into the equestrian world, how her riding has developed and, perhaps most importantly, what she originally thought about dressage before she joined Collective… 👀

Let’s just say, her first thoughts on dressage were probably a little different to how she feels about it now! And if you think you’ve already seen Emma’s personality around the yard, wait until you get to the end of this video 😂

🐴 How do you groom your horse?

Most of us have been grooming horses for years, so it’s easy to get into a routine without really thinking about whether there’s a quicker or more effective way of doing things. Emma shows her grooming routine and the little things she does to make sure she’s being efficient while still getting the best results.

But we’re always interested to hear how other people do it 👀 Do you have a grooming tip, trick or completely different routine? Let us know in the comments! 🐴✨

Looking for somewhere for you and your horse to call home?🏠🐴

We currently have availability for full, training, competing and sales livery, with a team that’s passionate about good horse care, training and helping horses and riders progress. We’ve worked hard to create a supportive, welcoming yard where the horses always come first and where owners can feel confident that their horses are in good hands.

So, what does your ideal livery yard look like? 🐴

If you’d like to find out a little more about life at Collective and what we offer, head over to our website or get in touch with the team. 👋

We all have to start somewhere, and for Tom, it started with his first pony. 🐴

Tom talks about where it all began and how his journey with horses started, before going on to share how that first pony eventually led him to competing, training and riding down the centre line at a much bigger level. From there Tom describes one of those most memorable moments winning his first major competition a pretty amazing milestone when you think back to where it all began.

Give the video a watch and let us know what you think. And if you’ve got your own ‘where it all started’ horse or pony, we’d love to hear about them too! 💚

🐴 Looking after the details – hoof care at Collective

Good hoof care is a big part of keeping our horses happy and healthy, so it’s something we make part of the everyday routine at Collective.

Emma runs through what she uses to look after the horses’ feet, starting with Tylers Anti-Bac Sole to help harden and protect the sole of the feet, after this she then applys Tylers Hoof Oil to support the health of the hoof and keep them looking smart. It’s one of those jobs that might seem small, but keeping on top of the little things makes a big difference when caring for horses every day.

🐴 A little update from the young horse team

There’s always plenty going on with the young horses at Collective, Tom gives us a update on how they’re all getting on.

They’re all at different stages, with some still finding their feet and others starting to step up to the next level. It’s been great to see their progress and watch them develop along the way. And a special mention has to go to Stranger, who though recently sold to America had already qualified for the Novice class at the Regionals! 🎉 We're excited to see his progress once he's settled into his new home in America.

💚 We never get tired of seeing horses enjoying a day in the field.

There's something special about watching the horses graze, stretch their legs and simply enjoy being out. But it got us thinking... has anyone got a paddock with a better view than this? 👀🌿

If you have, we'd love to see it! Pop a photo of your horse enjoying some turnout in the comments and let's see who has the most scenic paddock. 🐴📸

🎥 Working towards Piaffe?

Once you've done the groundwork, the next step is helping your horse understand what you're asking for under saddle. Not every horse learns it in the same way. Some respond better when you introduce the Piaffe from trot, while others find it easier to start from walk.

If you're working from walk, one thing to watch for is the walk becoming too tight. Before asking for the Piaffe, make sure you can still put your leg on and keep the walk loose and relaxed. A little movement from side to side can help keep your horse supple and listening to your aids.

It's about keeping the horse relaxed, responsive and thinking forwards rather than trying to rush the movement. A small change in how you prepare can make a big difference 🐴✨
