Defeat at Stanhope in a game where we deserved more. We took the long journey to play one of the league favourites this year in Stanhope. With no goalkeeper and a small squad we knew we would be up against it but our best 45 minutes of the season saw us 1-0 up at half time which really should have been more. Andy Wilson scoring a penalty late in the first half after he was wiped out taking a shot.

We were disrupted early in the first half with injuries to Fiddy and Andy, with Andy’s injury really disjointing our shape without a like for like replacement. From there we sat deeper and deeper and although Jonty remained largely untroubled in goal, there was the risk that Stanhope’s pressure would pay off. With around 25 mins to go they finished well to equalise, and shortly after took the lead when two missed headers saw them go through on goal. We pushed well for an equaliser with the Stanhope keeper making some good saves but two goals in the dying embers sealed the win for Stanhope. A positive performance with no points to show for it.

Shoutout to Jonty helping us in goal but MOTM once again goes to Charlie Carrigan for the fifth time this season for a brilliant game in midfield.

At home to Staindrop in the league cup quarters next Sunday.

Out of the Heart Foundation in tepid fashion. A pretty even first half was changed on the half hour mark when two goals from the visitors in 2 minutes put them ahead at half time.

We rallied slightly after half time with the returning Matty Wilson pulling a goal back from a Zak Bowman lay-off to get us back in the game. 10 minutes later luck was against us as a cross sailed in to the top corner to give Brandon their 2 goal lead again. In the last 7 minutes we tried to spark a comeback but two late goals from Brandon saw us bow out at the first round to good opposition.

Back in the league this week away to Stanhope.

Spartans are through to the next round of the County Cup after beating South Shields Riverview on pens after a 2-2 draw.

A bitty first half with both teams having big chances, it was us that went into the break with a 1-0 lead, Sam Thompson finishing well past the keeper and defender after capitalising on a mistake.

After a scrappy equaliser early in the second half, our subs made an impact and we got stronger in the second half with Richard Murray putting us ahead with his first goal of the season heading home a Louis O’Neill free kick. Riverview had a man sent off for overstepping the mark with the ref but a freak own goal sailed into the top corner to level things up on the 90th with almost 10 mins of injury time to try and get another goal. Penalties it was and after Riverview hit the bar on their first, we scored all 5 to win the game. Hobbs, Tate, Rich, Louis and Sam keeping cool to put us into the next round.

We were devastated to hear about Josh Walshaw’s ACL injury that rules him out for the foreseeable future recently. Josh joined the Spartans in November last year and made a massive impact to our double-winning team with 11 goals in 12 appearances and will remain a huge part of the team whilst he recovers. Through to the next round in comfortable fashion.

Straight out the traps with a 3-0 lead after 10 minutes, Charlie Carrigan and a Matty Wilson brace adding to their healthy early season tallies. After 12 minutes the visitors were down to 10, a ball was thrown at Jonty’s face from close proximity and after the offending player’s overly zealous reaction to the ref he was given his marching orders. Patty Brown got his first of the season from a set piece before the game finally calmed down. Charlie made it 5-0 on 37 mins with a well worked goal before Bishop Manor grabbed a goal before half time.

We didn’t push too hard in the second half knowing the job was done but a quick-fire double from Sam Thompson back from injury opened up the scoreline further. The game turned ugly at the end, Manor had a few attempts at taking their anger out on Charlie and they finally managed to connect with one of their tackles with a knee high challenge as he delivered the ball in for Sam to head home for his hat-trick. Chaos ensued after that, with the defender rightfully receiving a red card for the horror tackle on Charlie and a third Manor player seeing a red for trying to fight anyone and anything wearing blue.

Sam Thompson was exceptional scoring his first Spartans hat-trick but Charlie Carrigan once again took home the MOTM award, dancing around the Manor midfield effortlessly all game.

Frustrating defeat this weekend. After a decent start we handed Shuttle a goal after 8 mins and from there the hosts looked sharper to everything for the next 20 mins and raced into a 3 goal lead. Charlie Carrigan made it two goals in two games when he glanced home Mark Ross’ cross shortly before half time.

With a newfound confidence we started the second half excellently and a Matty Wilson brace brought us level, the first a bullet header and the second a scrappy goalmouth bundle home with 30 mins to go. From there we went flat and a sloppy goal from our point of view saw us fall behind once again. We threw caution to the wind in the last 10 minutes which resulted in Shuttle pulling further ahead.

A strange game with both teams having big spells in the game, credit to Shuttle for making it count in both boxes at the right times. One to learn from.

MOTM Charlie Carrigan for the 3rd time in 6 games.
