What a week! Road races, charity miles, half marathons and triathlons, with the Coasters collecting plenty of silverware along the way.

Massive congratulations to everyone who raced, supported and represented the club this week.

✨ Members' Moments ✨

This week has been all about stepping outside our comfort zones, trying something new, and celebrating the progress of others.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Alex S gave a shout-out to Linda H for another brilliant 0–5K group, who smashed their first week and are now onto week two! It sounds like everyone is loving it so far β€” a huge thank you to Linda for putting on another fantastic event. 😊

πŸ™Œ Linda H says one of her favourite things about leading the course is watching people improve and run further than they ever thought they could. Now if only she could remember to take a photo to prove they're enjoying themselves! πŸ˜‚πŸ“Έ

🐟 Charles E was impressed by the Fish group this week, with lots of Swans stepping outside their comfort zones to tackle a longer distance than usual. Working together, encouraging each other, and getting the job done β€” exactly what club running is all about! πŸ‘ŠπŸ»

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Courtney W celebrated his second run back after five weeks out with an ankle injury β€” and, even more excitingly, his first club run since the injury! A great step forward in his comeback. πŸ™πŸΌπŸ€žπŸΌ

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ DAWLISH COASTERS WEEKLY ROUNDUP πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

TUESDAY β€” STEP UP NIGHT!

Tuesday was Step Up Night, giving everyone the opportunity to try the next group up, push themselves a little further and, most importantly, discover that they absolutely CAN DO IT!

And judging by the evening's results…
THEY SMASHED IT! πŸ’ͺ🏻πŸ”₯πŸ‘πŸ»

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ 0–5K Group πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

A fantastic group of 16 determined new and returning runners headed out around Dawlish, making it all the way down to the bottom of Sandy Lane before returning home.

That's a whole extra road further than last week! πŸ™ŒπŸ»

Brilliant progress from everyone β€” well done! πŸ‘πŸ»

The only slight issue was that the Run Leader once again forgot the photo. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ“Έ
Clearly, remembering the camera is the next training milestone.

🦒 Swans 🦒

The Swans headed along the sea wall towards Red Rock before making their way to the Cove CafΓ© for a photo stop. πŸ“Έ
From there, they continued towards the railway signal gantry, gradually increasing the distance between stops before heading all the way back along the sea wall to the viaduct in one go. 🌊

Another photo opportunity followed with the black swans, before the group headed home along Brunswick.

Great running everyone! πŸ‘πŸ»

🐠 Fish 🐠

Tuesday's special edition Fish run attracted a whopping 25 runners, many of whom were taking their first plunge into aquatic-based athleticism after leaving the tranquil surroundings of the Swans behind. 🦒➑️🐠

Following what can only be described as a rousing motivational pre-run speech from the Run Leader, spirits were sky high as the enormous shoal set off on an undulating urban adventure.

The inspirational instructions were followed to perfection, with some majestic looping taking place as the lead runners orbited those further back with excellent elliptical precision. πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Unfortunately, the evening took an unexpected turn when one of the group had an impromptu encounter with the woodland floor. πŸ€•πŸŒ³

An unplanned holding pattern followed while injuries were assessed and some triage was administered. ⛑️

Fortunately, such an eventuality had apparently been anticipated all along (honest), with a fully equipped β€” albeit somewhat improvised β€” treatment centre conveniently located just around the corner at Tasha's house.

Cue another brief holding pattern while our fallen runner was patched up and efficiently redeployed. πŸ‘ŠπŸ»βœ…

The group then bravely tackled another wooded section, followed by a steep set of steps which everyone successfully conquered.

There was even the added bonus of several Strava segment trophies being secured along the way! πŸ†πŸ™ŒπŸ»

Eventually it was time to return to base, with 4Β½ miles conquered and the sweet smell of endeavour lingering in the air.
πŸ‘ƒπŸ€’

A huge thank you to Tasha and Sarah for their help with leading such a massive group.

And a MASSIVE WELL DONE to all those Swans who decided to identify as Fish for the evening.

You were majestic. πŸ πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ‘ŠπŸ»

🐬 Dolphins 🐬

There has been some debate over whether the Dolphin Run Leader fully understood the Step Up Night brief.

The instructions were:

"Be welcoming. Show everyone that it isn't as hard as they think and that they absolutely can do it."

Her interpretation?

Take them up some seriously big hills. β›°οΈπŸ˜‚

In her defence, they absolutely smashed it!
Dolphins are often undulating runs anyway, so the theory was simple: show everyone the worst it can be, and next time they decide to Dolphin, everything else will feel easy.

Well done everyone! πŸ‘πŸ»

THURSDAY

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ 0–5K Group πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Another fantastic homework session for the 0–5K group!

Everyone is making brilliant progress with their running, travelling much further along the pathway towards Cockwood.
In an entirely selfless act, the group even slowed down so as not to make the Fish look bad. 😊🫣🐠

Keep going everyone β€” you're doing brilliantly! πŸ’ͺ🏻

🦒🐦 Swagnets 🐦🦒

The Swans and Cygnets joined forces once again to form the mighty Swagnets!
The group headed through the Manor and Newhay before tackling the Radfords Loop, treating everyone to a few hills.

Which, as everyone knows, are something the Run Leader both loves and actively tries to avoid. πŸ«£β›°οΈπŸ˜‚

After conquering the hills, the group enjoyed a lovely flat stretch along Weech Road, Old Town Street and the High Street towards the South Devon.

A quick detour provided an opportunity to admire the sea views before heading back up Brunswick to base.

Around 6–6.5km completed by a fantastic mixed group.

Great running everyone! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘πŸ»

🐬 Dolphins 🐬

There are few certainties in life…
Death.
Taxes.
And undulating Dolphins runs. πŸ¬β›°οΈπŸ˜‚

Another week, another collection of hills.
Well done Dolphins! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’ͺ🏻

🌟 STEP UP NIGHT SUCCESS! 🌟

A huge well done to everyone who stepped outside their comfort zone this week β€” whether that meant moving up a group, running further than last week, tackling some enormous hills or simply giving something new a go.

The biggest step is often just believing you can do it.

And this week, you all proved that you can. πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

Tuesday

Away Run – Mamhead

A group headed off to Mamhead for an away run.

Literally nothing eventful happened.

But…

THE PUDDLE FROM LAST YEAR IS STILL THERE! πŸ˜±πŸ’¦

Some things in life change. Some things stay exactly the same.

Apparently, this puddle has chosen permanence.

A lovely run nonetheless! πŸ‘πŸ»

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ 0–5K – Week 1 πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

The brand-new 0–5K group got underway this week, with all 14 runners doing brilliantly on their very first session! πŸ’ͺ🏻

The group covered more than 2 miles during the 30-minute session, which is a fantastic start.

Well done everyone β€” what a way to begin your running journey! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸŽ‰

🦒🐦🐠 Swagfishnets 🐠🐦🦒

The Swans, Cygnets and Fish joined forces for a rather impressive combined group β€” otherwise known as Swagfishnets. πŸ˜‚

A total of 20 runners headed out towards Dawlish Warren, with plenty of looping and regrouping along the way to make sure everyone was comfortable and able to run at their own pace.

The group made great progress to the Warren before returning along the sea wall, clocking up nearly 5 miles in total. 🌊
Fantastic pacing and brilliant teamwork from everyone!

And a special thank you to Carly for taking the photo… despite managing to escape being in it herself. πŸ“ΈπŸ˜‚

Awesome running everyone! πŸ‘πŸ»

Thursday:

0–5K

Week one of the 0–5K homework session saw another fantastic turnout!

The group tackled a nice, flat session of 15 Γ— 1-minute runs, each followed by a 1-minute recovery walk.

And the verdict?

Everyone agreed that it felt easier this evening! πŸ™ŒπŸ»

That's exactly what we like to hear.

Great work everyone β€” keep it going! πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

🦒🐦 Swagnets 🐦🦒

The Cygnets and Swans joined forces for another combined run, with 21 runners heading towards Aller Arch and up the valley.

The scenery is certainly looking greener than it did on our last visit! 🌿

The mission for the evening was simple: get past the bench and keep going.
The ever-improving Cygnets made it to the bench, stopped briefly for a photo πŸ“Έ, and then continued onwards, while the Swans carried on further up the valley.

Everyone then regrouped and headed back together, descending Weech Road before tackling a little more elevation up towards Longlands and finally returning to base.
A comfortable 6km run for a fantastic mixed group.

Well done everyone! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ¦πŸ¦’

🐠 Fish 🐠

Tonight's Fish run featured not one, not two, not three, but FOUR makeshift Run Leaders! πŸ˜‚

The route had been carefully designed by Anna, who unfortunately had to drop out at the last minute.

So, with four leaders suddenly available, the only sensible option was to follow Anna's route exactly β€” partly out of respect for our fabulous friend and partly because none of the four of us had the energy or inclination to come up with another one. 🀣

The route took us climbing towards Ashcombe before turning up the little square loop by Whetmans.

Still going up…

We stopped briefly for a photo with a lovely view πŸ“Έ before finally being rewarded with the glorious descent and retracing our route back towards home.

There may also have been one runner who was considerably happier than they were on Sunday, while someone else who had been very happy on Sunday was rather less enthusiastic tonight.

Roles reversed. 🀣

Everyone did brilliantly, especially one runner trying Fish for the first time! πŸ πŸ‘πŸ»
And remember β€” Fish is for anyone who can run continuously with minimal breaks, regardless of speed. We generally aim for around 4.5–5.5 miles in the hour, depending on the group.

The faster runners loop back to make sure everyone is included, so nobody is left feeling like they're at the back. Routes can also be adapted to help everyone get the most out of the session.

So don't be afraid to give Fish a try! πŸ’ͺ🏻🐠

Tonight we covered around 5 miles.

Fantastic running everyone! πŸ‘πŸ»

🐬 Dolphins 🐬

Tonight, six Dolphins took on the streets and absolutely smashed out an 11km round trip. πŸ’ͺ🏻

A great effort from everyone and another fantastic evening of running.
Well done Dolphins! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ¬

Another brilliant week across the Coasters, with new runners taking their first steps, established groups joining forces, and plenty of miles being clocked up.
Great work everyone! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ™ŒπŸ»

🐦 Cygnets 🐦

On Thursday, the Cygnets enjoyed a lovely, steady and mostly flat run through the town gardens and out to Coryton Cove, where we stopped for the obligatory group photo. πŸ“Έ
We then headed along to Coastguards before continuing out towards Langstone Rock. With fewer stops than usual, the group covered just over 4 miles β€” fantastic progress from everyone! πŸ‘πŸ»

At this rate, there are definitely some Swans in the making! πŸ¦’πŸ’―

🐠 Fish 🐠

Tuesday:

The lovely shoal of Fish took on a relatively gentle and sociable route, starting with a short loop around town before heading up towards John Nash Drive.

From there, we enjoyed the lovely downhill breeze of Lea Mount before stopping for a quick photo. πŸ“Έ We then stretched our legs along the sea wall, cheering on the Puffins as they smashed out some excellent efforts! πŸ§πŸ’¨

The route back took us via Rockstone, the main road and a little detour through Lanherne.

The front runners were given strict instructions to regularly loop back past the back runners, making sure everyone felt included and nobody was left behind. This gave us a steady, continuous run where everyone could settle into a pace that worked for them.

Fantastic running from everyone, and a warm welcome to Mark on his first Fish run! 😊

Thursday:

Six Fish took on a rather loopy route that even the Run Leader couldn't quite remember by the end! Thankfully, he had sensibly put the route on his watch. πŸ˜‚βŒš
There were a few ups, a few downs, plenty of zipping along the sea wall and, naturally, plenty of looping.

Great effort everyone! πŸ πŸ‘πŸ»

🐬 Dolphins 🐬

What initially looked like an evening destined to attract just one runner somehow transformed into six divine Dolphins, one spectacular Shark and one negative, nimble, naughty Needle Fish. 🦈🐟

The promise was a nice, steady run at a comfortable pace, so we headed off around The Strand before tackling Strand Hill β€” the first of two hills. We then descended towards Secmaton before crossing the new canal path and making our way towards Lady’s Mile.

From there, we settled into a steady run along the sea wall.

It was at this point that the Run Leader spotted a familiar-looking bright yellow shirt approximately a kilometre in the distance. πŸ‘€

The newly branded Coasters Shark had apparently decided they had far too much energy and needed to unleash it with a sea wall sprint. πŸ¦ˆπŸ’¨

They eventually returned to the group slightly sweatier than before!

All in all, a surprisingly large Dolphin group enjoyed a lovely evening run.

As for the negative, nimble, naughty Needle Fish who ran considerably faster than the Run Leader and then complained about getting a stitch… we'll say nothing. 🫣😘

🐧 Puffins 🐧

On Tuesday, the Puffins kicked off another six-week training block! πŸ’ͺ🏻

Returning to Dawlish sea wall, they completed 10 Γ— 1-minute efforts at around 5k effort, with 1-minute recoveries between each one.

And because apparently that wasn't enough, they followed it up with 4 Γ— 30-second hill efforts on Lea Mount! ⛰️πŸ”₯
Clearly the Puffins had decided that 10 efforts weren't quite painful enough.
Well done Puffins! πŸ§πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’ͺ🏻

Another fantastic week of running from across all the groups. Whatever your pace, distance or preferred level of hill-induced suffering, there's a place for everyone at Dawlish Coasters! πŸ’›πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Run Round Up for 11th August

🐦 Cygnets 🐦

A lovely warm evening saw a small but mighty group of Cygnets head out along Plantation Terrace before looping around the Lawn and making our way to Coryton Cove.

Keeping a steady and impressive pace, we continued along to the railway signals before looping back towards Black Bridge, dodging the waves along the way! 🌊 We then headed over the bridge and back along Exeter Road to Barton’s.

A lovely social run with plenty of chatting β€” and with some definite Swans-in-the-making amongst the group! πŸ’―πŸ¦’

Well done everyone! πŸ‘πŸ»

🦒 Swans 🦒

The Swans kept to the coast this evening in search of some much-needed shade and breeze for their 7km run. πŸŒŠβ˜€οΈ

We headed along the sea wall to Dawlish Warren, before tackling the Lady’s Mile hill, heading back down over Black Bridge and then continuing along to Coryton Cove.
A lovely coastal run and great effort from everyone! Well done Swans! πŸ¦’πŸ‘πŸ»

🐠 Fish 🐠

A sizable shoal of 21 cheerful Fish headed out this evening for a varied 7.5km adventure! πŸ πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

We started along the seafront, successfully dodging the choppy waves on the way to Black Bridge, before heading up and over the bridge and onto the grassy cut-through towards Ladies’ Mile.

From there, we continued all the way to the landward car park at Dawlish Warren, before taking on the climb up Mount Pleasant. Things got briefly exciting when we almost lost three super-keen runners after a hidden signpost disappeared behind the brambles! Thankfully, everyone was reunited and we continued down Week Lane onto Secmaton Lane.

A quick group photo stop πŸ“Έ was followed by the long slog along Secmaton to the roundabout, before finally making our way along Elm Grove Road, Exeter Road and the High Street back to base.

And we were only 10 minutes late β€” practically early by Fish standards! πŸ˜…
A huge well done to everyone, especially those who are new to Fish or returning after a break. It was a warm and fairly tough route, and you all did brilliantly! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’ͺ🏻

Great running, Fish! πŸ πŸ™ŒπŸ»

🐧 Puffins 🐧

Puffins were absolutely wonderful tonight! πŸ§πŸ‘πŸ»

15 x 1 minute on / 1 minute off had everyone working hard, encouraging each other and β€” most importantly β€” no one falling over! πŸ˜†

Fantastic effort from everyone. Well done Puffins! πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ
