Fewer road deaths in 2025 - but serious injuries have risen.

New final figures published by the Department for Transport and reported by Road Safety GB show a mixed picture for road safety across Great Britain.

In 2025:
- 1,556 people were killed on Britain’s roads - a 3% reduction compared with 2024
- 29,911 people were killed or seriously injured (KSI) - an increase of 4%
- Total reported casualties remained broadly unchanged at 127,870

While the fall in fatalities is encouraging, the rise in serious injuries highlights how much work there is still to do.

The figures also show some notable differences between road users, including a 13% rise in motorcyclist fatalities and a 14% increase in cyclist KSIs.

Road Safety GB has reinforced the importance of evidence-led action to address the causes of fatal and serious collisions and protect those most at risk.

For organisations whose employees drive for work, these figures are another reminder that managing road risk cannot be treated as a one-off exercise.

At BLT Driver Training, we support businesses with professional driver assessments and training designed to identify risk, develop safer driving behaviours and help organisations better protect their people on the road.

It’s World EV Day!⚡

Electric vehicles are changing the way we drive - but making the switch isn’t simply about getting behind the wheel of a different vehicle.

From regenerative braking and vehicle handling to getting the most from your range, driving an EV effectively can require a different approach.

At BLT Driver Training, our EV Driver Training helps drivers make the transition with confidence.

Our practical, one-to-one training combines on-road coaching with EV-specific theory, helping drivers:
🔋 Understand and optimise vehicle range
⚡ Get to grips with regenerative braking
🚗 Adapt to differences in EV handling
🛣️ Develop safer, more efficient driving techniques
✅ Build confidence in an unfamiliar vehicle

Delivered nationwide by qualified DVSA Fleet-approved trainers, the half-day course is ideal for drivers who are new to EVs and organisations introducing electric vehicles into their fleets.

Because investing in new vehicle technology should also mean investing in the people driving it.

What if we could identify road risk before a serious collision happens?⚠️

A recent road-safety pilot involving Leeds City Council explored how connected vehicle data, AI-powered video analysis and road-safety engineering could be used to identify locations where drivers were repeatedly experiencing difficulties – including some that had not yet become high-profile collision sites.

The project relates to identifying risks on the road network, but the principle raises an important question for businesses too:

Why wait for an incident before looking at driver risk?

For organisations whose employees drive for work, proactive assessment can help identify areas where additional support or development may be needed before problems escalate.

BLT Driver Training’s practical Driving Assessments evaluate a driver’s competence and risk profile and identify any further training needs, with a Driving Risk Assessment Report provided afterwards. They can support new starters, health and safety compliance and performance improvement.

Assess risk. Identify training needs. Intervene earlier.

🚕 Would you know what to do if a passenger gave you cause for concern?

Taxi and private hire drivers meet people from all walks of life every day - including children and vulnerable adults.

That means drivers can sometimes find themselves in a position to notice when something doesn’t seem right.

Our Virtual Safeguarding Course for Taxi and Private Hire Drivers helps drivers understand how to recognise, prevent and report safeguarding concerns, including abuse, exploitation and neglect.

Delivered live via Zoom, the CPD Certified course uses discussion, scenarios and real-world examples to help drivers understand both their responsibilities and the steps they can take when concerns arise.

Because safeguarding isn’t simply about meeting a requirement. It’s about helping to protect the people who place their trust in you.

Not every disability is visible - and not every passenger will need the same support.

For taxi and private hire drivers, providing a professional service means being able to support passengers with a wide range of needs confidently, respectfully and safely.

BLT Driver Training’s Disability Awareness course helps drivers develop a better understanding of both visible and hidden disabilities and their responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010.

The live virtual course explores how drivers can provide appropriate support while helping passengers feel respected, comfortable and confident throughout their journey.

Because accessible transport isn’t simply about the vehicle, it’s about the experience you provide too.

Helping mature drivers stay confident and safe for longer

For many people, driving is closely linked to independence, family, routine and freedom. But as we get older, changes to eyesight, health, mobility, reaction times and confidence can all have an impact behind the wheel.

Our new blog looks at why proactive support for mature drivers matters, including the latest Great Britain Road Safety Strategy 2026, our work with Rob Heard MBE and the launch of our Mature Drivers Confidence Builder Course.

The course is a relaxed, reassuring and supportive 60-minute, one-to-one on-road session for drivers aged 60+, delivered by a specially trained DVSA Approved Driving Instructor.

Whether you’re looking for reassurance for yourself or have started thinking about a parent or loved one’s confidence behind the wheel, the course offers a positive and supportive next step.

Been away? The rules don’t take a holiday✈️

You’ve landed, collected your bags and you’re ready to head home - but are you safe to get behind the wheel?

Merseyside Police has become the first force in the UK to deploy new evidential roadside alcohol-testing technology, as part of an operation targeting drink-driving among returning holidaymakers.

The campaign highlights an important summer road-safety message: alcohol consumed before a flight or while travelling home still counts when you get behind the wheel.

If you’re driving home from the airport, plan ahead.

- Think about who is driving before you travel
- Be mindful of alcohol during your journey home
- If there’s any doubt, leave the keys alone and arrange another way home

A holiday might be over, but getting home safely is still part of the journey.

Been away? The rules don’t take a holiday.
