Bonsai 2026

Huge thanks to Jidel Judo for running a great introductory event for our fifteen young judoka. Players were split into groups of three or four, matched for weight and grade, and guided through competition rules and regulations. The event gave children (and parents) an introduction to competitive judo.

Our coaches, Karen, Scott and Nick were very impressed with the effort and determination shown. There’s always lots of things to work on and develop back at the club as we build our skills and become better judoka.

We are very proud of you all. Most importantly, we hope you had fun.

“If there is effort, there’s always accomplishment.”

Grading Monday

HUGE congratulations to the 22 members who completed their grading tonight. From 6th Kyu to 1st Kyu, we are very proud of the judo displayed and your technical knowledge.

There was a great atmosphere on the 6.30-7.30pm technical session while gradings were taking place, with members training, working on theory and generally enjoying their judo.

Alba Veterans Open

Big congratulations to everyone from the club that attended and competed in Alba on Saturday, a veteran tournament organised by EdinburghJudo coach and examiner David Gibson.

Medals, points and experience all round. Lots of great stuff, as well as skills to revisit and develop back at the judo club. For some members, it was a first competition experience and we are very proud of you.

Inverness Grand Prix

Thirteen players. Thirty-nine contests. From AA band through to seniors. Three gold medals. Three silver. Three bronze. Four players without a medal.

The journey up to Inverness looked different for everyone. A group travelled by minibus on the day, some families travelled in vans, cars and camper vans, staying overnight or with family.

Every single player entered the event wanting to win gold. For many, it didn’t happen. But what did happen was personal growth, development and an opportunity to learn from a setback. To go back to the club and work on something new, something different and find a way to be better.

Post-randori. A very sweaty session tonight, and Coach Kirsty’s last Monday night before she heads off to university in Aberdeen.

She’s not going far though. We’ll see her refereeing at lots of events, and we’re sure she’ll be popping back to see everyone she’s coached over the last two and a half years, and trained with since she was three years old.

Lots of our young team will be heading off or returning to university soon, with some starting their first year a little closer to home, or travelling there and back each day.

We wish everyone heading off or back, all the best. Make new friends, create lots of memories, have plenty of fun, but always come back to visit us!

JudoScotland Veterans 1st Kyu and Dan Grading.

The club were out in force at today’s grading, held at Glenrothes Martial Arts Centre.

Chris A earned his final ten points to secure his 2nd Dan and can now wear it with pride, having completed his theory last year.

Dan A earned twenty points towards his 1st Dan, competing extremely well and displaying some great judo along the way.

Allan F earned thirty points, moving closer to his 1st Dan and showing off some nice ouchi and kouchi gari’s along the way.

Charles K collected ten points towards his 1st Dan at only his second competitive outing. He then went on to compete against his clubmate, only losing out after a brilliant contest.

Konstantin M had a fantastic day, winning five contests and firing through his final three to win his line-up. Once Konstantin completes his theory, he will be the proud owner of his 1st Dan.

Both Kirsty W and David G gave up their time to referee at the grading, fitting it around their busy schedules.

A big thank you to the support team on the day for their time, the encouragement, coaching and for generally helping to settle some nerves.

IJF COACHING ACADEMY

We are incredibly proud of coach Craig Arundel who is taking part in the IJF Academy Undergraduate Certificate as Judo Instructor course this week at the British Judo Centre of Excellence in Walsall.

Leading the practical course are former international judoka Tina Trstenjak, Olympic, World and European champion, and DANIELA KRUKOWER, World and Pan American champion. They are working under the guidance of Daniel Lascau, IJF Academy Sports Director and 1991 World champion.

The IJF Academy qualification is an internationally recognised higher education qualification and is mandatory for coaches working matside on the IJF World Tour.

Before attending this intensive practical week, Craig completed 18 weeks of online learning and assessments. The practical sessions have continued to challenge every participant, helping them develop their technical knowledge, delivery and understanding within a positive, high quality learning environment.

Craig’s final technical examinations take place tomorrow. We are extremely proud of the commitment he has shown and wish him the very best of luck!
