đź’ ARE WE MAKING IT EASY TO LEARN BOWLS - OR EASY TO GIVE UP?
👉 Every experienced bowler was once a beginner.
👉 Every confident player once asked questions.
👉 Every good bowler once delivered a bad bowl.
👉 Every club member once had to learn the unwritten rules.
So why do we sometimes expect newcomers to understand everything before they’ve even had the chance to learn?
đź«Ż Mistakes are part of learning.
đź«Ż Questions are part of learning.
đź«Ż Getting it wrong is part of learning.
If a new bowler feels embarrassed every time they make a mistake, they may stop asking questions.
If they’re constantly criticised, they may stop trying.
And if they feel like everyone is watching for what they’re doing wrong rather than encouraging what they’re doing right, they may simply stop coming back.
…That doesn’t mean lowering standards.
…It means creating an environment where people can improve without feeling judged for not being there yet.
đź’ĄExperienced bowlers have something incredibly valuable to offer: knowledge.
But knowledge only gets passed on when people feel comfortable enough to receive it.
So perhaps the question isn’t:
“Why aren’t new bowlers good enough?”
Maybe it’s:
“Are we giving new bowlers the environment they need to become good enough?”
What would happen if every experienced bowler saw themselves not only as a competitor, but also as a mentor for the future of the game?
We’ll never know if today’s beginner will turn out to be tomorrow’s champion…
But first, we have to be a culture and community they have to want to come back to!
