Friday's Dartmoor walk took in a huge amount of interest in such a short distance! Starting at Norsworthy plantation, we visited Leather Tor bridge, one of the last clapper bridges to be built on Dartmoor in 1833. We then explored the 'big potato cave', once used to store root vegetables for the disused and now derelict farm and longhouse on the site. Emerging from the forest we then looked down at Crazy Well Pool, created as a result of tin mining and now a popular swim spot. We then 'handrailed' the Devon Port Leat (a man-made channel that contours the hillside, taking water from the Cowsic River north of Princetown to the Devon Port Dockyards, and now just Burrator) towards Nuns Cross and Nuns Cross Farm. The cross, a boundary marker, is also known as Siwards Cross and is one of the oldest crosses on Dartmoor, with its first mention in 1240.
Nuns Cross Farm, now a bunkhouse of sorts, is a great example of a 'newtake', where if an individual could build a house and light a fire for 24 hours they could claim the land!
If that wasn't enough, we then visited an old disused tinners' house where the fireplace can still be seen. Finally we crossed open moorland to visit the Bronze Age stone row and circle (Hingstone Hill) near Down Tor.
After the summit of Down Tor, we then descended back to Norsworthy Bridge for an ice cream and a paddle in the stream.
Overall another awesome day on Dartmoor. Thanks to everyone who attended.

*Andalucia Nordic Walking Holiday - April 2027*
I'm really excited to announce that Nordic Walking Devon has partnered with Miro Caminade, who runs Nordic walking holidays in Andalucia, Spain, to host a Nordic walking holiday.
Spring is a great time of year for walking in Southern Spain, and very beautiful, with all the spring flowers.
Miro's program of walks and sightseeing activities, looked so enticing that I have secured the provisional dates for a group from Devon to travel there.
Wednesday 21st April to Tuesday 27th April - 2027.
(To be clear, the travel days would be outgoing on Wednesday 21st April and returning on Tuesday 27th April). This allows for 5 days of walking along with exploring the region via guided tours.
The best flights are from Bristol Airport to Malaga.
If you would like to find out more, an example itinerary and full details can be sent to you. Just send me an email at [email protected]
I've already sent this out to everyone on my mailing list.
,
Our host Miro from Andalucía Nordic Walking Holidays has previously worked with Bristol Nordic Walking and is affiliated with INWA Nordic Walking
Once I have at least 6 people interested, we can set up a Zoom call with Miro to ask questions and find out more.
I’m really excited about this, and after the winter, rain and drizzle in Jan, Feb and March, it will be something to really look forward to.
Very best wishes & Salud!
Fiona
