🥋✨ WORLD CUP MEDALIST SENSEI JOHN WATKINS✨🥋

We are absolutely PROUD to celebrate Sensei John Watkins, a martial artist whose passion for karate has taken him from the dojo to the world stage.
At the GKR Karate World Cup 2026, competing in the 35-44 years (3rd Kyu+) Male division, Sensei John claimed BRONZE in Individual Kata. 🏆

Sensei John’s journey is one of steady progression and genuine love for the sport.

Starting his karate journey in September four years ago, Sensei John threw himself into tournaments just 3½ years in, an early start to competing. Later on moving onto Nationals as a recently graded green belt and claiming SILVER.
What began as a drive to improve his karate has blossomed into something more: tournaments are now a treasured part of his social calendar.

Since then, Sensei John has:

✅ Progressed to 2nd Kyu, demonstrating consistent dedication
✅ Become an instructor, giving back to the community
✅ Now a WORLD CUP MEDALIST 🌍

Sensei John, your journey shows us that karate is about so much more than medals, it’s about community, growth and discovering a passion that enriches your life. Your dedication as both a competitor and an instructor inspires everyone around you.

Region 38 is SO proud of you – here’s to your continued success! 🙌💪

Are you guilty of any of these?...

In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer

First tournament of the year done and dusted!!!

A fantastic turnout across the Region. With our first handful of students from Guildford!!!

Total medals:
6!!!

Gold: 6
Silver: 2
Bronze: 1

We had our incredible team of ladies doing Kata that wiped the competition and came away with Gold Medals!! Even beating a team of instructors! 🏅

Sensei Ben did an excellent job in Team Kumite coming away with a Bronze Medal!🥉

Sensei Tony performed wonderfully with strong Kata’s and Kumite and came away with double gold!! 🏅🏅

Congratulations to everyone that competed, it takes a lot of courage to put yourself to the test against other students and participate.
Remember medals aren’t the only takeaway, the experience of competing against others and cheering for your fellow students is all a big part of the day! Medal or not we all come back with determination and focus on the next tournament.

Now for June!!
